"Five Star Paining in McFarland is a superb, outstanding company. They showed up on time, worked efficiently and was extremely pleasant to work with. They moved all the deck furniture and grills and didn’t say a word when my dog accidentally walked through the primer. I don’t ever see myself needing another painting company other than Five Star!"

"Culver's painting did a great job. They had the fence completed in one day with a crew of 4. We needed them to come back to do some touch up staining that they had missed, and they were back within a week to complete the job. I would definitely hire them again."

Small jobs welcome

"Nick was honest about what to expect. Wear is showing after a couple winters But he did a great job. My deck looked beautiful when it was done. He also did several other painting projects on the exterior that turned out better than I could imagine."

"The crew worked together to power wash, scrape, sand and paint my deck. It had multiple layers that needed to be removed. It took place from start to finish over 5 days, with 3 to 4 men working. I'm very happy with the results."

"Juan and his crew are outstanding. My house and barn look like jewel boxes. And not a drop of paint spilled anywhere! They protected all shrubbery and decks with drop cloths and cut back branches where they needed to be. The crew was polite and efficient. Quick to discern and repair previously unnoticed problems. Their price was very fair and reasonable. Power washed, scraped, primed, and 2 coats of paint in 5 days. We bought the paint -- Behr Premium. Hire this crew. You'll be glad you did. If I could give them 10 stars, I would."

Customers say: Quick response

"We recently had Jose and his crew paint my son's entire condo. Upon meeting Jose he was very kind, confident, and excited about helping my son revamp his new living space. Jose's mission statement listed on his website is absolutely accurate! The communication, attention to detail, and quality of work was outstanding! The cost was very fair for the quality of work done. I would 100% recommend this company and will hire him again!!! A+"

Deck Staining questions, answered by experts

It’s important to make sure the wood on a new deck is properly seasoned. Seasoning a deck is simple: Once you build it (or have a pro do so), just leave it alone so it can acclimate to the environment. If you don’t give the deck proper seasoning time before staining, the stain can lock in any lingering moisture and cause mold, rot, and other moisture issues down the road. Give the wood at least four to eight weeks to season before you stain.

Applying too much sealer to a deck might seem like extra protection, but it can cause more harm than good. Wood is a porous material with a limited capacity to absorb liquids. When you go overboard with sealer, the excess can't soak in and instead forms a film on the surface. This leftover layer is prone to peeling, cracking, and trapping moisture, ultimately defeating the purpose of sealing in the first place.

No, you don't need to stain Ipe decking, although you can if you want to change the color. You will, however, need to apply a UV coating if you don't want the natural color to fade. Speak to a deck staining specialist near you to discuss the best options if you want to stain your decking. And remember that you’ll need to seal your Ipe wood deck annually to protect it from scratches and Mother Nature.

You can apply stain over peeling stain, but it’s not a good idea. Your old stain will get in the way of your new stain bonding to the wood, so you’re likely going to see the same issue again shortly after application. Your best option is to sand off the old stain and clean the surface thoroughly before applying new stain.

The general consensus is that two coats of stain are required and since the cedar is siding, a third coat of sealant is always a good idea. This helps protect the wood and stain, so you won’t need to resand and restain for at least a decade. Each stain after the first will darken the wood, so be aware of that when choosing a colored stain.
