Small jobs welcome

"Very professional start to finish. Received a quick detailed estimate, and scheduling and service were also very promptà ¢à  à ¦speedy in fact. Our countertops look fabulous, exceeding expectations. Ità ¢à  à  s difficult to find someone to do this work, and I had my doubts about using a company I found on the internet. But we are so glad we took the chance on Surface Link because they did a perfect job. It is Hard to find a contractor we can say that about todayà ¢à  à ¦. We are often disappointed. Not with this company. Or this technician (Steve ) who is a pro at this. Time will tell, but as of today, we are thrilled."

"I found the company on Angies list and bought the 4 hours of carpentry as a gift for a friend. The owner Curt Shultheiss came and looked at what had to be done.Curt said every problem has a solution.Curt showed a portfolio of his past work he had done.It was quite impressive. He was a very personable fellow. The crew he sent was very professional in every sense. They even took the picture off the walls and removed the furniture for my friend.Curt followed up on the job all the time the carpenters were working. The job turned out well and I would highly recommend Curt and his crew."

"Scott, the The Window Store rep, was very prompt and accommodating. He listened to us and then showed us appropriate options. He also separated the expenses so we could remove what we could live without and stay within budget. The Window Store (TWS) does offer some discounts like an on-site advertising discount, referral discount, and a deal where they offer a free refrigerator with a certain amount of work done; the value of the refrigerator credit can be credited to the bill. It seemed like a fair deal, so we signed that night.

The guy who measured the cabinets also was one of the craftsmen and was punctual and worked quickly but accurately. We were told the work would start in a few weeks, but they called us in a few days to tell us they could start right away. The job took four half-days -- demolition, veneering the outer cabinet boxes, veneering the cabinet faces/sanding, and finish work (moldings, etc.). The two guys doing the work did a nice job of cleaning up each day so we could use the kitchen. They did have to come back the next week to install a piece of crown molding which was miscut, but they were on time and got in and got out.

The kitchen looks terrific! It's a huge change from what we had before, and the work met my expectation of excellence. Corners are straight, moldings meet without gaps, cuts are smooth. Even though we did not replace the countertops or cabinet hardware, people who've seen the old kitchen think we did. The look is _that_ different.

A note about the price. As I mentioned earlier, we felt the price offered on the night of their visit was fair. It was more than we expected, but that is not uncommon for home-improvement projects :-)  We liked the people we'd had contact with and I liked that they were local and of long standing with the company. A few days after we signed, however, we got a bid from a kitchen remodelor we'd had in the same week. His bid was _half_ of TWS'. He, too, got very good reviews on Angie's List. I do know the work and materials were not identical (for example, TWS finishes the bottoms of cabinets so they match the cabinet box, and TWS' cabinet samples looked more solid). But at half the price for good work ... So I rated the price as Fair -- I think we got what we paid for. Not a ripoff, not a screaming deal. Just a word to shoppers who have a smaller budget."

"The work went very well, my wife and I were pleased with the prompt professional service. The price was affordable and the work was great, once finished he cleaned after himself and made sure we were satisfied. I would definitely refer this company to anyone I know who needs any home repair work. Chris met our expectations and beyond with the affordable price and high quality service along with a time frame."

"Panda was not very dependable.  Project was to be completed by August 15, 2011.  Window was not installed until mid October
2011.  We had to employ another handyman to complete the work the Panda people were supposed to do but did not.  Panda was hard to contact, and slow to respond."

Countertops and Backsplashes questions, answered by experts

Concrete countertops should be sealed every one to three years, depending on the type of sealer used and the level of use your countertops get. For instance, hardworking kitchens will need yearly sealing. Sealing is important because it protects the surface from stains, moisture, and daily wear. Monitoring the countertop for signs of wear can help determine the ideal sealing schedule for your countertop.

The average countertop square footage in a kitchen is 30 square feet, but that number varies widely depending on the size of the kitchen. Some smaller kitchens may only have one stretch of countertop or an L-shape. Larger kitchens can include an island or peninsula and more expansive countertops. When deciding what works best for your home, measure your kitchen countertop and make sure to include countertop cost calculations in your budget.

Butcher block countertops are generally more affordable than quartz countertops. The average quartz countertop costs around $4,500, while the average butcher block countertop costs around $3,750. However, high-end butcher blocks with custom features can negate the savings, since certain woods come with a higher per square foot cost.

Yes, Corian® and other solid surface countertops can be cut with standard woodworking tools like a circular saw or a jigsaw, but using the correct blade is crucial for the best results.

The recommended blade is a tungsten carbide-tipped blade, often called a solid-surface planer or triple chip grind blade. This type of blade is hard enough to cut through the material effectively. For a jigsaw, a fine-tooth down-cutting blade should be used.

It is important to note that a diamond blade is not necessary. Diamond blades are designed for harder materials like natural stone, concrete, or brick, and Corian is not a natural stone.

Using blades designed for wood is not recommended as they can cause microfractures that weaken the countertop's edges. While a tungsten carbide blade provides a much cleaner cut, the resulting edge will still be rough and must be sanded and smoothed to prevent microfractures from developing over time.

Corian® is a popular countertop alternative to quartz. Created from an acrylic resin and natural minerals, Corian® resembles quartz and offers some similar benefits, but it comes at a cheaper price. Corian® countertops cost an average of $26 to $65 per square foot, which is less than half of what quartz countertops usually cost. The downside is that Corian® isn’t as durable as quartz, particularly regarding its resistance to scratches and high temperatures.
