"Owner, Jim Mass, responded promptly to set up a personal visit to explain the process and options to myself and my wife. Once the work was scheduled; crew arrived on time and work, including total clean up, was completed within the estimated time of less than day. All was completed within 1 week of the owner's initial visit. I would definately recommend Insulation Specialists to friends, which I have done."

"We have been in a 2 year long build with many facets. I reached out to Dason at the very beginning about the project and his professional insight was spot on. I had very specific engineering requirements for our build to achieve a very high performance, Thermal comfort gave us what I required. I had a previous Spray foam contractor from a prior build and received 3 additional bids for this 2020 project. I choose Thermal comfort from the 4 companies for several reasons and I am very pleased that I did. Closed cell IMO is the only way to go, that said the install is critical and the site crew was fantastic. George, was the lead and listened to my install concerns and did an excellent job. Rich and Walt were also on hand and also did great. They accommodated us the best possible in the timing of our project. They were thorough, conscientious and and their site prep and clean up was excellent. We have future projects and they will be our insulation contractor from now on."

"Everyone at Comfort 1st are wonderful to work with ! I recently got my attic insulated with them. Overall, very pleased with team and the work, I would highly recommended them. I received several quotes from competitors, but, David from Comfort 1st, was the only one to detail out all aspects of the job and was thorough in explaining the process. Mike was also great to work with and really knows his stuff. The crew who came onsite did a wonderful job in preparation and cleaned up once they were done. Overall, great communication with all team members. Once again, great company, would highly recommend them."

Insulation questions, answered by experts

The amount and type of insulation your home needs depends on your location, climate, and the specific installation area (attic, walls, or floors). Your local building code will typically determine the minimum required R-value. For specific recommendations, Energy Star suggests the following R-values: homes in the Southern U.S. should have R30 to R60 in attics and R13 to R25 in floors and walls; homes in moderate climates need R38 to R60 in attics and R25 to R30 in floors and walls; and homes in northern states require R49 to R60 in attics and R25 to R30 in floors and walls.

Ductwork should be wrapped in insulation in certain locations. This includes unconditioned interior parts of the home, such as attics, crawl spaces, basement ceilings, and between floors. Duct joints should also be insulated since they're more likely to leak air than other parts of your system. Building codes in some areas also require ductwork to be insulated.

Insulating windows without plastic is usually the better method. Outside of simply replacing your windows, you could buy cellular shades, which trap air between the window and the home, add a window film that blocks UV rays and traps heat, or cover your windows with a low-emissivity coating called “low-E.”

Pipes in your house can freeze after six hours or so if you lose power and temperatures are below freezing. You can prepare for potential power outages by winterizing your pipes with insulation. Also, whenever temperatures drop below 20 degrees Fahrenheit, turn your faucets on very low and leave them dripping until temperatures rise.

Winterizing your outdoor plumbing keeps your outdoor spigot from freezing and potentially bursting. This includes draining residual water out of the pipe and spigot after turning the valve off, then removing garden hoses and other attachments from the spigot before winter comes. Insulating the pipe that leads to the spigot and installing a freeze-proof faucet also help, as does installing an outdoor faucet protector.
