The common formula for measuring a roof is length x width equals square footage. Professional roofers measure the length and width of your roof, including dormers, and determine its pitch and rafter sizes. If a roof surface is a triangle, they’ll divide that square footage by two, then add up the square footage of each surface to get the total for the roof.

The roof overhang, also known as the eaves, does count as part of the roof’s square footage because it must be covered with the roofing material. The overhang is one of the reasons why you can’t base your roof's square footage on the square footage of the house. The roof square footage must also account for the pitch of the roof as well as the eaves.

Homeowners insurance may cover the cost to tarp a roof if the type of damage falls within your coverage. For example, roof damage caused by a natural disaster may fall within your plan, and the cost of a temporary tarp may be incorporated. In general, however, simply tarping your roof for renovations will often not fall under insurance coverage.

Many states require roofers to be licensed, and some states don’t mandate licensing. You can use Angi’s state licensing tool to check if a roofing company holds the proper licensing for your area. A licensed roofing contractor will provide reliable roof installation service, leading to a reduced risk of leaks in the future, which can be expensive to repair. Paying more for a licensed roofer upfront often means paying less over time.
