You can think of a flat roof as a green roof, as it does offer some environmentally-friendly advantages. If you’re building the roof trusses yourself, which isn’t recommended, it will be more affordable than buying pre-built trusses. Trusses cost more because they use the same amount of material, but you’ll also be paying for the labor, as well as the delivery to your home. However, if you’re having a contractor build the roof for you, then trusses will be less expensive, as the labor costs to build roof framing on-site will cost more.

Roll roofs don’t last as long as traditional roofs, like those made of asphalt shingles. Modified bitumen roofs are similar in look to rolled roofing but have a 12 to 15 year warranty.

Spray foam roofs don’t stand up well to impact, so they won’t last as long as something like a tar and gravel roof and other flat roof materials in areas where extreme weather is common. Due to the reduced durability, you’ll also need more frequent maintenance and repairs for a spray foam roof, and those costs will add up over time. Spray foam roofs are relatively uncommon, so you may also struggle to hire a roofing contractor who can install one.
