They gave an estimate via photos and email since job site was over an hour away which worked great. Worked til job was finished and did so in a timely manner. If you’re deciding between limewash versus whitewash, know that both have a chalky matte appearance. Limewash is made from lime, water, and sometimes pigment, while whitewash consists of lime, water, white chalk, and binders (though you can get a similar look with watered-down white paint). Whitewash has fewer options for color customization, and it sits on surfaces instead of being absorbed into them, which can trap moisture. Whitewashing costs less—about $1.40 to $4.20 per square foot.

Stain is meant to be absorbed by the porous wood, allowing some of the natural grain to show through. With that in mind, you don’t want to add more stain than the wood can absorb, as you risk covering up its natural markings. Generally, two coats is the maximum you should do, although very dense hardwoods may only be able to take a single coat.

Unlike a sealer, which sits on top of the wood grain, a combination stain and sealer soaks into the top layer. As a result, stains do a better job of protecting the wood from UV damage and rot and last significantly longer. Use a near-translucent stain that won’t alter the cedar’s natural color for the best results.

Late spring or early summer is usually the best time to stain a fence. Pick your timing carefully and aim to start your DIY when you see a forecast that shows no rain and low humidity levels for at least a few days. If it’s too hot (like in the middle of summer), the stain will dry out too quickly. If it’s too cold (like in the winter and early spring), the stain might not be able to fully dry.

  • Prepping and protecting the areas not being painted

  • Scraping away loose paint

  • Cleaning off dirt, grease, and debris

  • Caulking gaps and openings

  • Priming with a quality paint primer

  • Painting the prepared areas, including trim and accents with chosen paint finish

  • Cleaning up the site and disposing of tape, plastic, and drop cloths
