"Doug Wilkin was friendly and professional. He checked my water heater, and claimed that I would have more hot water, but I don't get enough for my walk-in tub. Maybe I'll have to figure out how I can buy a new one."

"Harker Heating And Cooling is the best HVAC contractor we have ever worked with in 40 years. Their web site proudly says they are an “honest company with Midwestern values.” That is absolutely true. Their representative provided in-depth advice, answered our questions. and returned our messages. Their techs were knowledgeable, professional, careful, and friendly. They were on time, on call, and on budget. The service they provided for us over the years could not be better. So when the time finally came to replace our old furnace and A/C we selected them. Unfortunately, they encountered many unexpected problems installing our new equipment. Many more than they had anticipated for the job. But their representative pledged to address every one of them no matter how hard it was for them or how much of their time it took. And that is exactly what they did. No quibbling and no questions. They got the job done right. If you want an honest family contractor who stands behind what they do, and lives by those Midwestern values, then this is the company to hire. You will be glad you did. "Avid pluming, what a great company ! My wife & I moved into our new house and after 2 huge water bills and some phone calls to our water company found out that the old toilet in the basement had a small leak. We contacted Patrick @ Avid plumbing. He was so friendly and showed sincere concern about our problem and put us on the appointment schedule the same week. With just about everyone in the service industry being short staffed right now I really appreciated him getting us scheduled. The day of the service plumber Art let us know when he would be arriving. Upon arrival he wore his booties over his shoes and wore a facemask as well. Art was so polite and listened patiently to our "story" and inspected the basement where the broken toilet is. He explained to us what our different options are regarding replacing this old toilet or fixing it. After we decided he worked diligently and gave us updates on his progress. When he was all finished the explained to us exactly what he did and how to monitor if a problem like this would happen again. He was such a nice young man and we are grateful for his concern. The service experience overall from the first phone call to the nice lady at the office to Art was exceptional . My wife & I would recommend him anytime to anyone who needs an excellent plumber. Thank you Art! Jurgen & Sandy Reinhold"

Water Heaters questions, answered by experts

If you want instant hot water and to reduce water waste while improving convenience, a hot water recirculating system is worth it, especially if you find your hot water heater is not hot enough. These systems can save thousands of gallons of water each year so you don't have to wait for hot water at faucets and showers. The upfront investment can be high, especially for systems requiring additional plumbing, but the long-term savings on water bills and added comfort make them a worthwhile upgrade.

The average lifespan of a water heater is eight to 12 years. If your water heater is approaching its first decade of life and is giving you problems, talk to a plumber about your replacement options.

Keep in mind that certain parts of a water heater, such as the anode rod, may need replacement long before the heater itself. An anode rod often has a lifespan of three to five years.

Every type of water heater has its advantages and disadvantages. Understanding those can help you decide the best type for your situation and budget.

Pros

  • Safer than gas or propane

  • Doesn’t require extensive venting systems

  • Lower upfront costs

  • Simpler to operate

  • No pilot light

  • Easier installation

  • More efficient heating than gas models

  • Available as point-of-use (POU) and whole-house units

Cons

  • Slower to heat water

  • Longer recovery time

  • Possibly higher operating costs

  • Doesn’t work during a power outage

  • Costs can increase without a 240-volt connection

Several signs indicate your water heater may be failing or in need of replacement. Key indicators include:

  • Age: A water heater older than ten years is approaching the end of its typical lifespan.

  • Water Quality: If you notice rusty or discolored water from your hot water faucets, or a foul odor similar to rotten eggs or sulfur, it can signal internal corrosion.

  • Unusual Noises: Banging, rumbling, or popping sounds from the tank often mean sediment has built up, causing the unit to overheat.

  • Leaks: Any water pooling around the base of the tank or visible leaks are clear signs of failure.

  • Performance Issues: A decline in performance, such as water not getting hot enough, taking longer to heat up, low water pressure, or decreased efficiency, suggests the unit is struggling.

  • Visible Damage: Obvious rust and corrosion on the exterior of the tank can indicate a more serious internal problem.

While these signs often point to replacement, some issues may be fixable. It's best to consult a professional plumber to diagnose the problem before investing in a new unit.

When the water expands in a hot water heater, it puts pressure on your hot water pipes and can cause leaks or a rupture in the hot water tank under certain conditions. Pipes or water heaters may split due to the pressure where there is a backflow preventer that prevents the hot water heater from diffusing pressure by releasing water back to the public water line.

In these scenarios, a hot water heater expansion tank provides a place for the hot water heater to relieve pressure and prevent bursts and leaks.
