There are sections of my driveway where nearly all of the seal coating came off in less than 9 months, so I am going to have to re-do the job myself. This is not what I had in mind when I paid over $1,100 (a fair price, if it would have lasted longer). I understand that the work isn't covered anymore, as I didn't report it until the thaw revealed so much was missing, and I'm not upset with Merit or their staff. Yes, you can pour concrete over an existing concrete basement floor to save time and money on fully ripping out an existing concrete slab. However, it’s not a perfect solution, so consult a pro before moving forward. You must take specific measurements, and these kinds of floors don’t have the same longevity.

You can seal a concrete slab by cleaning the surface, filling in any cracks, etching the surface, applying a sealer, and letting it dry. Concrete slabs don't typically need sealing, but you can use a topical concrete sealer if you notice signs of water damage. If you haven't already fixed the cause of the leak, then you'll want to repair the plumbing before you seal a concrete slab.

Concrete resurfacing is the process of applying a new, thin layer of concrete over an existing concrete slab to give it a fresh appearance. The new layer is often between 1/4-inch and 1-inch thick, so it involves much less material than you’d need to pour a new slab, which is often 4 inches thick. Resurfacing also gives you the opportunity to add color or texture to your slab without totally replacing it.

Resurfaced concrete can last anywhere from eight to 15 years on average. Just how long your resurface concrete driveway lasts depends on how often you seal the concrete, the amount of traffic, how well the concrete resurfacer was applied, and even the soil quality. Poor soil that led to premature cracks in your existing concrete can quickly lead to even more cracks and problems if you don’t fix the root cause of the cracked concrete.

For thin driveway cracks that aren’t widening or lengthening, a polyurethane crack filler is usually the best way to seal the crack and prevent further damage from water and ice. If you have cracks that are more than ⅛-inch wide or driveway cracks that continue to grow, you should call in a professional driveway repair company to fix underlying problems—like insufficient support from the soil underneath—before filling in the cracks. An epoxy sealant is a better option for wider cracks after the surface is leveled and the underlying problem is fixed.
