"The staff seem to be really good and professional people. The reason for my 2-star rating is that the work done simply didn't deliver on expectations of durability. There are sections of my driveway where nearly all of the seal coating came off in less than 9 months, so I am going to have to re-do the job myself. This is not what I had in mind when I paid over $1,100 (a fair price, if it would have lasted longer). I understand that the work isn't covered anymore, as I didn't report it until the thaw revealed so much was missing, and I'm not upset with Merit or their staff. Lally columns do require some kind of footing to ensure they have a strong enough base to provide the support they need to deliver, and, at the very least, they need to attach to the floor below. Some contractors will just use the existing foundation as a footing for temporary Lally columns, while some circumstances demand that the expert install a new footing. You might need a local structural engineer to weigh in on which is best for your project.

Concrete homes have better fire resistance because this material is highly resistant to fire and heat. But any paint, siding, windows, roofing, or other materials on a concrete home may still be flammable. Never try to stay in a building with a large, active fire or a wildfire approaching because this can still be deadly. However, building a fireproof home with concrete can better protect the structure against total destruction.

Thicker concrete is less likely to crack due to extreme weather changes. An easy way to cut concrete pavers without a saw is to use a hammer and chisel. You can make a few passes over your paver with a hammer and chisel to make a fissure where you want the paver to break. Once the divot is about 1/8 inch thick, drive the chisel hard into the center of the line to complete the cut without using a saw.
