Your Decorating Dreams Realized? Since 1986 *Finest *Largest Selection of Decorator Fabrics *Custom Upholstery & Slipcovers *Custom Window Treatments *Bedspreads *Headboards *Pillows

"The original estimate to reupholster a storage ottoman was $467 which included time and material to reline the inside. Cindy was surprised to see that my ottoman was lined with press board so there was no work to be done there. When I suggested that there should be some price adjustment, she responded that it took 4.5 hours to complete the outside at a very reasonable $60/hour so she opted not to honor the original estimate. If it took 4.5 hours on the outside, it would have surely taken 2-3 hours for the inside plus material which would have likely inflated the cost by another $150 - $200. I certainly would not have opted to go with Cindy at a final cost of almost $700!"

Upholstering questions, answered by experts

The average time it takes to reupholster a piece of furniture is around eight hours, but it varies significantly based on the piece. A professional can usually reupholster smaller furniture units like dining chairs or small ottomans in two to three hours, while an entire sofa might take several days or up to a week. Antique furniture tends to take longer to reupholster because greater care needs to be taken to preserve the piece. Your timeline might be a bit longer if you need other repairs done, like sanding and refinishing wood components.

In most cases, it is more affordable to reupholster furniture than it is to replace it, but it depends on the quality and age of the furniture you’re considering getting reupholstered. Antique pieces are always worth reupholstering, as it’s the only way to preserve the piece and extend its life. Newer pieces of furniture are more often made using lower-quality materials like medium-density fiberboard or plywood that don’t have the same lifespan as things like hardwood. For newer pieces, your furniture reupholstery specialist should be able to help you determine the best course of action.

Doing your own upholstery work is possible, but it’s typically a better idea to leave the work to professionals. Without experience and the proper tools, it’s difficult to get a professionally finished appearance for your furniture, and many DIYers end up spending money on tools and materials only to hire a professional when they can’t get the fabric to look right. If you have reupholstery experience, feel free to give it a shot. However, if you’re not confident in your skill level or you’re working with antiques, it’s worth the money to hire a pro.

On average, the cost to reupholster furniture is about $720 per piece. However the price range to upholster a piece of furniture varies widely from about $380 to $1,150 or more, depending on the material type and availability, repairs needed, and the complexity of the project. Fabric costs typically range from $50 to $70 per yard while the cost of labor runs from $40 to $100 per hour.

Consider durability, color, texture, room use, and personal style when selecting fabric. Fabrics like linen, cotton, or microfiber offer versatility and strength.
