"Victor showed up on time and provided the service I requested (two key fobs programmed and emergency keys cut) efficiently, effectively and at a reasonable cost. He was professional and personable throughout. Highly recommend!!"

"Overall the locksmith that came out was friendly and very polite. He even stayed to make sure that the electronic lock functioned correctly. As such I have given him full marks for his customer service. The issue that I encountered was over the pricing that I was originally quoted vs. what was asked for at completion. The work I had completed was a lockset size change with an install of a single lock. The job took one hour to complete. Over the phone, I was quoted $90 install ($29 visit, 81 install), and canceled a scheduled appointment I previously had due to this better price and availability. After the install, the Tech asked for $204. This was not discussed until my card had already been charged without being told the amount. After refusing to sign for the amount, he worked with his management to refund the amount to what Home Advisor charges for the same service, $120. My recommendation to potential customers in the future, make sure you ask your locksmith once they arrive to confirm the price that you have been offered in advance of the work being completed."

"I called Alarm Protection Group AFTER my office was burglarized. Now I feel SAFE. William is great to work with. He's neat and tidy, prompt, presentable - not a butt-crack type of guy, and he doesn't leave a mess in his wake. He's also knowledgeable about the equipment and only uses high-quality products."

"Tom is wonderful - knowledgeable, reliable, and very professional. He fixed my very old and sad-looking door, and when I wanted to enlist his help for more projects, he pointed out what needed to be repaired and what did not, rather than trying to persuade me into booking more work with him. definitely a trustworthy man and would 10/10 recommend!"

Locksmiths questions, answered by experts

It could be difficult to get in and out of a lock for several reasons, such as the keyhole needing additional lubrication. Particles, debris, and dirt can also get into a lock, making a key stuck (the lubrication can help with the removal).

It is best to use a dry lubricant, such as a Teflon-based option, for door locks. Unlike popular oil-based lubricants, dry lubricants leave a non-stick, water-repellent coating that does not attract dust, dirt, and other debris. Using an oil-based lubricant can cause these particles to build up inside the lock, making it difficult to operate or even damaging the internal mechanism. You can find dry lubricants, some of which are made specifically for locks, at most hardware stores.

Typically, it can take around 15 minutes to rekey a lock. The time depends on the type of lock and how skilled you are at rekeying. The first time you rekey a lock, it may take a little longer. Once you get the hang of the process, it will move along much more quickly.

If part of the key is protruding out of the lock, you can use a pair of needle-nosed pliers or tweezers to gently turn the key in the lock to open the door. If the key is fully inserted into the lock, you may also be able to use a key extractor to help turn the key into the unlocked position.

But if the key breaks off halfway into the lock or you simply can’t reach it to help engage the unlocking mechanisms, you should probably call a professional.

It’s possible, but depends on the design of your lock. Some door locks that lack a keyhole do boast a small hole on the exterior handle or knob. This hole’s primary function is to allow water to drain out of the lock, in addition to giving homeowners an easy spot to insert lubrication. However, you can typically use a paperclip in this pinhole to unlock the door by manipulating the mechanism inside.
