Small jobs welcome

"Very satisfied with the whole process. Gerald did an excellent job. Arrived punctually and observed COVID protocols. Explained clearly what he was going to do and how. Showed us preliminary findings, and obtained our permission to take samples for lab testing. We felt he listened to, and responded to, our concerns. Overall a very professional experience. We’ve now received the written report and feel we got what we wanted: an objective analysis of the problem and information we need to remedy it."

"We had pest and ant problems in a 1930’s home we recently purchased. It had been vacant for some time. Part of the solution was to redo the crawl space. Andy Construction gave us a very reasonable quote for removing what was there and installing the vapor barriers, replacing spotty floor insulation, sealing cracks and new access doors. The crew was courteous, on time, and left no mess. We haven’t seen a mouse since and the ants are getting under control. Our floors and home are so much warmer! We heartily recommend Andy’s Construction."

"Curtis is an anomaly among contractors. He arrived exactly when he said he would. Did a thorough inspection of the job. Provided a reasonable quote and had the work done in a timely manner. Half the contractors I contacted never replied and two never showed up for the appointments they set. I highly recommend DHT Construction and Roofing."

"We were so impressed with Blake who inspected our home today. He worked for a couple of hours and determined our home was safe and sound, and very dry. We were so thankful that he gave us an honest answer, even though it meant no sale for him. We would highly recommend them for an honest thorough inspection."

"Kirk performed a thorough blower door test, walking me through every point that he later included in his report. With his report in hand, I have confidence in my understanding of the priority improvements that I can make to my sealing my home's envelope, which is precisely what I'd hired him for."

Home Inspection questions, answered by experts

By nature, two-prong outlets aren't grounded—but the box they run to might be, which makes them safer. The safest way to test if an outlet is grounded is to purchase a circuit tester, which cost about $20 at home improvement stores.

If you discover your outlet (or outlets) aren't grounded, know that this greatly increases your risk of personal injury and electrical fires. You may want to consider installing new three-prong ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) outlets. On average, the cost to install GFCI outlets is about $210 per outlet.

Generally, no. Most homeowners insurance policies will not cover polybutylene pipes because they are considered defective and high-risk. Damage from these pipes, such as leaks, may not be covered as it often doesn't fall under the category of "sudden and accidental" damage. Some insurance companies may even threaten to terminate a policy if the pipes are not replaced. While you should review your personal policy for specific details, you will most likely need to pay for the pipe replacement yourself. It is advisable to prioritize repiping your home to avoid costly, uncovered water damage.

A dryer vent inspection is simply the process of checking the vent for the possibility of damage or clogs. You can do it yourself or hire a pro. Pull the dryer away from the wall and inspect the portion of the vent that’s behind the appliance for lint buildup or kinks. Check the connection of the vent to the wall for loose parts or lint that’s escaping the vent. Check the exterior exhaust vent for signs of damage or lint blockage. A pro can check the length of the vent inside the wall for you.

Inspections for new construction may not be legally required, but you should consider them a must if you’re buying a new home. The quality of the construction can vary widely by builder, and many inspections, even for brand-new homes, can uncover problems with framing, structural components, mechanicals, appliances, and more. Professional inspection reports give you leverage to push the associated repair costs to the builder rather than paying for them yourself, so they’re always worthwhile, if only for the peace of mind they provide.

Hiring a structural engineer who inspects foundations is the best way to find out if your foundation is up to code. These pros know building codes in and out and can inspect your foundation and prepare a report detailing anything that doesn’t meet code. A structural engineer can also recommend fixes for any problems they spot—you’ll just need to hire a foundation contractor to do the work.
