"My contractor from Miller Electric was Taylor. I highly recommend him for electrical needs (removed old fixtures; rewired, installed canned lighting and dimmer switches). He was punctual, experienced; answered all of my questions cheerfully; provided fast, friendly, efficient service; cleaned the work at the end of each work day-an absolute joy to work with! The experience exceeded my expectations. I will definitely hire Miller for any future electrical needs."

"DES installed 2 new electrical outlets, 2 new electrical panels, 3 wall heaters with dedicated circuits, and other miscellaneous electrical work. They explained options and what they would need to do to get the job done correctly. They arrived at the scheduled times, worked around our dog, explained the work they were doing, were friendly and easy to work with, and explained color and size options. When a light malfunctioned, they quickly scheduled an appointment for the waranty work which I am very satisfied with. I would hire them again."

"Skipper & Sons installed a entryway chandelier in high ceiling 18' tall. They installed a new light and switch in an unfinished closet, and 3 new canned lights and new switch in my master bedroom. They also fixed the wiring in an existing switch in the downstairs hallway. They did professional electrical work."

"Three electricians worked on the job & completed it in 3 1/2 hours! I was expecting it to be done in 5-6 hours. They even hooked their generator up to my big freezer! The City inspector just checked their work, said it was a job well done! I would definitely hire them again."

"Nick went above and beyond to install my home car charger. He had to get through concrete in my crawlspace and installed the charger on the wall which I did not expect him to complete. The price was reasonable when compared to two other estimates. I would highly recommend First Choice."

"Needed to run 40 Amps to an outdoor heat pump. Made the appointment last minute, they showed up the day the heat pump was being put in. Figured out I could reorg my panel instead of add amps. Did the work immediately. Ran the outlet and charged me $1700 less than my other quote. I highly recommend the juice company."

"Prairie View Electric is an A+ business. I did a major remodel and addition which required dealing with old electrical wires going/coming from who knows where, installing electrical both inside and outside the home and added an RV hook up. Dustin was quick, he's a clear communicator and took the time to understand my needs and explain when something needed adjusted instead of just making assumptions. I highly recommend his company and will definitely use them again in the future!"

Generator Install questions, answered by experts

The cost to install a whole-house generator averages $5,200, with a typical price range of $1,500 to $8,900. However, total costs can vary from $400 for a small portable unit to over $18,000 for a large-capacity system. The most significant cost factor is the generator's size and capacity, but other variables include the brand, fuel type, and labor for assembly and installation.

Generator costs can be broken down by type:

  • Portable or Emergency Backup Generators (1kW–7.5kW): $500 to $2,000

  • Partial-Home Generators (9kW–20kW): $2,000 to $6,500

  • Whole-House Generators (22kW–48kW): $5,000 to $18,000

To avoid paying for more power than you need, consider hiring an electrician to calculate the electrical load for your essential appliances. It is also recommended to get at least three quotes to find the best deal for your specific needs and budget.

Setting up utilities on a vacant property usually takes at least a few months, or between 6 weeks to 16 weeks. This process requires working with the local planning and zoning department, hiring a building contractor or engineer to design the utility layout, securing permits, laying the lines, and connecting the utilities.

If you’re wondering if you can use your electric vehicle as a backup battery, it depends on whether your EV is compatible with bidirectional charging. This technology allows energy to flow both ways, enabling vehicle-to-home (V2H) backup power, vehicle-to-load (V2L) for appliances and camping, and vehicle-to-grid (V2G) to support the power grid. Compatible EVs convert stored DC energy into usable AC power, helping reduce energy costs and enhance grid stability while providing emergency backup power.

Energy output depends on turbine size, average wind speed at your site, and system efficiency. A 5 kW turbine in a good wind location can generate 8,000 to 12,000 kilowatt-hours per year, which may cover a large portion of an average home’s needs. Accurate output estimates require a professional wind assessment and a review of your household’s energy usage patterns.

It’s usually better to repair your generator if it isn’t working properly, as it will typically be much more affordable and should yield similar results. Generator repairs cost around $300 on average, while installing a new whole-house generator costs around $5,000 on average. The only exception is if you know your generator is reaching the end of its useful life, usually between 30 and 40 years. If you have an older generator, you could face multiple repairs in the coming years, which might mean that a full replacement will be more cost-effective over time.
