The longevity of any cabinet depends on factors like upkeep, the amount of heat and moisture in the home, and general wear and tear. Popular hardwood options for long-lasting cabinets include oak, cherry, maple, walnut, and hickory. While these materials are a worthwhile investment for those planning to stay in their home for decades, their durability comes at a higher price compared to alternatives like furniture board, laminate, and plywood. The average cost for solid wood cabinets ranges from $100 to $1,200 per linear foot.

As a homeowner, there are a few things you can do to prepare for your cabinet installer. Once the cabinets are ready for your home, you can do the following:

  • Ensure pets are safely in another room, out of the way of open doors and large moving objects.

  • Clear countertops for removal.

  • Tidy the floor the installers will walk through and around. 

  • Prepare to have the installers in your home for the entire day, for multiple days, until the project is done. Expect to have a noisy environment, especially if they will remove old, existing cabinets.  

It’s best to stick with lightweight cabinets, such as medium-density fiberboard, if you don’t have a wall stud to secure them to. Unless you’re attaching the cabinet to a flat board attached to wall studs, it’s best not to risk it with heavy cabinetry or contents. Solid wood cabinets and heavy dishware should be avoided if you cannot secure the cabinet to a wall stud. Either way, always check the weight on your wall anchors and be sure not to exceed it.

Walls in good condition with an even surface should be fine for frameless cabinet installation. Older, uneven, or warped walls could create problems. Your studs and their spacing are especially important, since frameless cabinets rely so much on wall attachments. Call in a professional installer for a consultation if you aren’t sure.

If your cabinets don’t reach the ceiling, you can extend them higher, adding visual interest, privacy, and storage space to your kitchen. Depending on the height of your ceiling, you may want to extend the structure of the cabinets and install longer doors to make each individual cabinet taller, or you could add additional cabinets above the existing ones. Either option is cheaper and easier than installing entirely new cabinets.
