"Bruce and all of his people were outstanding to work with. Everyone was very courteous, friendly and hard working. Every question I asked about the installation was completely answered. Since my garage elevation is lower than the street, a trench drain was recommended to be installed in order to divert the water from the doors. This was not suggested by any other contractors for the job but this is the best way to handle the runoff water. They installed a quality trench drain along with a drainage pipe routed to a location that I selected. Along each step everyone paid close attention to detail and made sure things were done right including grading, backfill, compaction, asphalt placement, final compaction and seal coating. After each day the entire area was thoroughly cleaned of any debris. Bruce is a true craftsman of his trade and I would highly recommend his company to anyone. I am very pleased with my new driveway and have had numerous compliments."

There are quite a few differences between concrete and asphalt. Concrete is more costly up front and more challenging to repair. Asphalt does better in cold climates and works well with radiant heat systems. Porous asphalt is also excellent for wet climates, as it allows the water to drain away. The size of your driveway apron will vary based on your town's building codes. On average, they range between 12 and 24 feet wide and eight to 15 feet long. One end of the apron usually matches the width of the driveway—10 to 12 feet wide for a single-car driveway—while the street end flares out to allow cars to turn in and out.

If you’re looking for a similar, eco-friendly driveway material, you might consider one of these options:

  • Permeable pavement: This material is sometimes called “pervious” or “porous” pavement; it allows stormwater to drain into the subbase, eliminating storm drain costs. 

  • Gravel: Consider paving your driveway with locally sourced gravel. By sourcing from a nearby source, your money won’t fund international shipping and will be invested back into your local community.

  • Natural stone pavers: Because natural stone pavers are made from organically-produced stone, there’s no new manufacturing required, limiting the environmental impact. In addition, water easily flows and drains through the gaps in the pavers.

Both concrete and asphalt are appropriate for your driveway apron. The choice often comes down to local laws and the current material of your driveway. In some cases, your town may require you to install wire mesh or rebar to fortify the material, but both are common in apron installation.

The main difference between asphalt and blacktop is that asphalt has a lower ratio of bitumen—a low-grade tar-like crude oil—than blacktop. While blacktop is heated to 300 degrees or more, hot-mix asphalt is heated to a lower temperature, typically between 275 and 300 degrees Fahrenheit.
