Grain is a furniture & lighting design company based in Burlington, VT. We are drawn to simple forms that are honest about their history; wood that is native to our part of VT; and discarded materials that have a strong visual form or patina, and are far from the end of their use cycle. This is expressed in three ways: Building pieces based on a central element (found metal, a unique piece of wood) that sparks us to create a one-of-a-kind item. Designing & building our own collections. Designing & building custom commissions, in collaboration with a client, to meet their specific needs. We are in the midst of designing our first furniture collection of tables, stools and benches, designed and built in collaboration with a local metalworker. We are excited to make them available soon at several retail locations in the Burlington area. Our work is currently available at Anjou & the Little Pear in Burlington, VT, and at the gallery at The Shelburne Craft School in Shelburne, VT.Grain is a furniture & lighting design company based in Burlington, VT. Lighting questions, answered by experts

Yes, the outdoors is one of the areas where GFCI is always required. The receptacles used outdoors must have a ground-fault circuit interrupter, or GFCI, for safety reasons. Not only does GFCI make it safer for operation even in wet locations, including bathrooms, outdoors, basements, and other areas, but also they’ll automatically trip if there’s an imbalance in the circuit, keeping you safe from electrocution and decreasing the risk of an electrical fire.

To synchronize your Christmas show to music, you’ll need the standard holiday lights, decorations, lawn ornaments, tools, and outdoor-rated extension cords. You’ll also need a digital controller, computer, and software that allows you to create your musical show.

The lifespan of a pool light depends on the type, but thankfully, these lights are designed to last a long time before they need to be replaced. LED bulbs last the longest, about 20,000 to 30,000 hours, while incandescent bulbs last the shortest amount of time, about 1,000 to 5,000 hours. Fiber optic pool lights will last around 6,000 hours.

Local building codes typically require conduit around exterior wiring. Conduit protects the wire from moisture, extreme temperatures, sun exposure, and harsh weather conditions to prolong its lifespan. When a wire is worn out, it can be dangerous as the risk of electric shock or fire increases.

High-quality landscape lights that are hardwired and properly maintained can last for 10 to 25 years or more. You’ll usually get a longer lifespan from soffit lights and wall-mounted lights that aren’t directly exposed to the elements or prone to damage from foot traffic or vehicle traffic. Solar-powered and battery-powered lights often won’t last as long, but you can still expect a lifespan of five to 15 years.
