He was always on time, he had some great suggestions to improve on our intended design, and the work was top notch. As we were removing some lally columns to make the basement space more open, the first thing Mark did was bring in a structural engineer to review the loads and determine how best to shore up the beams. Formica® is actually the brand name of the laminate countertops that they produce. As such, there is no difference between Formica® versus laminate other than laminate is the generic name for layers of paper topped with an image layer that have been compressed under high pressure to form a solid, easy-to-maintain countertop. You should always seal cut countertops to prevent damage and to keep them looking their best. The right way to seal countertops depends on the type of material. For laminate and wood, apply epoxy or other specialty sealers by pouring it onto the countertop and letting it flow across the whole surface to the edges, guiding it with a paint stick or putty knife. You will need to move quickly so that it does not dry or harden before you are done. For stone countertops, use a sealant specially manufactured for your type of stone and apply it according to manufacturer directions. 

The best blades for cutting laminate are carbide laminate-cutting blades. These blades have horizontal teeth rather than teeth that point upward and cut on the upward stroke. Cutting on the upward stroke, which is how wood blades work, can chip the laminate. Laminate-cutting blades also tend to have more teeth than wood blades, reducing the chances of chipping the countertop.

While laminate countertops can’t be restored like other materials like butcher block, granite, or Corian can, they can be restored to a smooth, sealed surface using refinishing kits or by covering them with a vinyl peel-and-stick sheet. You can also consider painting your laminate countertops for a fresh look. 

Clean with a damp cloth and mild detergent. Avoid using abrasive cleaners or cutting directly on the surface.
