"The technician emptied the freezer, which was in the basement, to work on the part that needed repair. Then he neglected to put anything back into the freezer, including a turkey I had bought for Christmas and a rack of ribs. Two days after he left, I went out of town for two weeks. The turkey actually exploded and spewed its liquid all over everything, which had to be discarded. I let AHS know and they couldn't even bother to call me or follow up on this. I'm considering not renewing my contract with them because of the quality (or lack thereof) of many of the providers they send."

"My existing hot water heater (12 years old) would not relight and had exhibited signs of tank failure (some discolored water and slight leak). I contacted a few vendors and NE Renovations met my budget and schedule constraints. I made the initial call the evening of December 28 and received a quick response from Richard Froais. The site survey and quote were received on December 29 with the installation taking place December 30 morning.

The installation crew, Jim and Randy, were punctual, courteous and thorough, and cleaned up the site well. It was a pleasure to work with them and NE Renovations.

Of particular note, my previous installation had some errors in the piping which were not apparent until a few years later. I related these symptoms to Richard and Jim who figured out the situation and agreed that it could be fixed as the new tank was installed. This I expect will create better operating conditions and longer life."

"Charles is perhaps the most friendly and professional contractor I have ever hired. He removed an old septic tank and replaced it with a new one along with a better leaching field. He then repaired and seeded the lawn where the work was done. I also had him remove a shrub and deliver stones for some landscape improvement. A genuinely nice person as well. I cannot recommend him enough."

Septic Tanks questions, answered by experts

While you can drain water softener backwash into a septic tank, doing so may cause several problems. One problem is that increased sodium chloride levels from water softener backwash can kill septic tank bacteria, decreasing the effectiveness of this wastewater treatment system. Another issue is that large calcium deposits can eventually stop up the drain field and lead to poor drainage.

Well water is often assumed to be hard because of its high mineral content. Hard water can lead to mineral build-up in your pipes and appliances. You can manage hard water by installing a whole-house filter system. These systems can help extend the life of your water-reliant appliances like your hot water tank and dishwasher.

A household of four can easily fill a 1,000-gallon septic tank within a week. It may be 10 to 14 days for smaller households. But the reason why you don't need weekly pumping is because the tank's contents eventually reach the overflow pipe. They flow down this pipe to the absorption area whenever water is used in your home. The tank keeps working at this full level until it's pumped again.

Trenches are typically 12 to 24 inches deep and 8 inches wide. However, the required depth depends on the specific project and local ordinances. For example, a French drain may need to be 18 inches deep, while a water pipe might require a depth of 24 inches and a drainage pipe 36 inches. Your city or county may have specific regulations, so it's wise to consult with an excavation professional to determine the correct depth for your project.

While abandoning a tank without treating it and following strict rules is illegal, there are several other ways to dispose of an old septic tank. One standard method is to pump out and crush the tank where it rests and bury it in the soil. Another is to remove it and transport it to a landfill. Finally, if abandonment is the best option, your contractor must pump out the tank and fill it with inert material, such as sand or concrete, depending on local regulations.
