Technically, a flat roof can be raised, but it’s extremely expensive, and there would not be much of a point. In most cases, below 40 degrees Fahrenheit is too cold to replace a roof. The cold affects the shingles, making it more difficult to adhere them to your roof. It also becomes dangerous for contractors to get up on your roof in the cold weather, as there can be ice and slush causing surfaces to become slippery.

Some people prefer to use connectors consisting of galvanized metal to replace the birdsmouth cuts on the rafter board. Common names for these metal pieces include hurricane ties and variable-pitch connectors. Making birdsmouth cuts is more cost-effective than purchasing these connectors for each rafter. However, because making large birdsmouth cuts to accommodate extra-wide exterior walls can weaken the rafter, a connector may be the better option in some cases.

In most cases and locations, roofs with a single layer of asphalt roofing shingles won't require roof removal before installing a metal roof. However, underlayment may be necessary on roofs with moderate shingle damage.
