"These guys did a great job on our retaining walls! They got started quickly and got our input on the key design options at each step of the process, and they cleaned up after themselves better than any contractor I’ve worked with. We got multiple quotes and the price was very reasonable. We love our new retaining walls!"

At Custom Concrete & Masonry RVA LLC, we specialize in providing top-notch decorative concrete and masonry services, including brick, block, stone veneer, and pavers. We take great pride in our work and offer competitive pricing. As a locally owned and operated business, we have been serving the community for five years and have over a decade of experience in the industry. Our commitment to quality and customer satisfaction has earned us a reputation that results in almost 100% of our work coming from referrals. We are eager to expand our company and continue to provide exceptional service. Please feel free to contact Julio or Diana Gonzalez for any inquiries or estimates. Our services do not include asphalt paving, and we do not fix cracks or level existing concrete. We are happy to provide an estimate for replacing old concrete.

"July 15, 2024 If you are looking for a business where the customer is not right, the owner has no patience and no interest in your feedback, and quality is not a concern, Custom Concrete & Masonry is the business for you. We asked Julio about the expansion lines. We voiced concern that these giant lines detracted from the look of the sidewalk and design. Julio assured us that once he was finished, we would barely notice them. We attempted to have another discussion with Julio in a very adult, mature fashion. All he kept saying was that he had no patience for this and wanted his money so he could leave. After trying to have a proactive conversation for 10 minutes, we gave up. We paid this man for something we hated. Our concerns fell on deaf ears. Many people were shocked by how ugly the sidewalk was and the 4” drop left on the edge was hazardous to say the least. Your sidewalk is one of the first impressions people have of your home and reflects on you and your home."

Stone and Gravel questions, answered by experts

Minor hairline cracks in mortar are normal over time. This is a natural occurrence as bricks settle. You should worry about cracks in brick if you see vertical cracks that widen as they move up, stair-step cracks, L-shaped cracks, or deep horizontal cracks. These are all more serious signs of foundation damage.

Mortar, or masonry mortar, is mainly used in joints and as parging for stone, brick, or cement construction. Stucco is primarily a surface material used as wall coverings. For maintenance, masonry will need repointing or replacing as damage or land shifting occurs, whereas stucco will need patching or refinishing as it tends to crack over time along with other types of wear-and-tear.

The size of your pizza oven will determine the number of bricks necessary to build it. So the bigger your pizza oven, the more fire bricks you’ll need to purchase. Keep in mind that fire bricks cost about $3 each.

A traditional German schmear uses mortar, making it unsuitable for adherence to painted surfaces. Professionals recommend removing any existing paint before applying mortar. However, you can rough up the painted surface and clean it to test if the mortar will stick. Remember that the underlying paint's texture and color may affect the schmear's final appearance—so starting with a bare brick wall will ensure the ideal finish.

It is possible, albeit a lot slower, to break up a rock using water. You would do this by freezing and thawing the water. You could create some initial holes or cracks in the rock, then pour water into the cracks or holes and allow them to freeze (so it's best to do this in winter or in colder climates). Since water expands when it freezes, this puts pressure on the inside of the rock and causes it to crack. You could continue to pour more water in and let it freeze to continue to break up the rock.
