As for the installation process, the crew worked like a well-oiled machine. Five or six guys were on-site and had the area cleaned, prepped and ready for installation in no time at all. All of the men were pleasant and professional. The bulk of the work was done in one day, with a small bit of replanting and mulching completed on day 2. One small section of the one-stone border bed needed some further adjustment after the crew was done, and Jeff was extremely gracious and agreeable in arranging for remaining stones to be left so the adjustment can be made in the near future. You can see the difference in quality between the old wall we have and the one Classic just installed. It is heads-above in quality workmanship. Watching during the construction of the wall, you can tell that this wall will last well beyond my lifespan. We couldn't be happier with the work and would highly recommend Classic Stonescaping & Gardens to anyone. The job did not go well (and although I have tried on numerous occasions to communicate with Abby construction about the work completed on my home there has been no resolution. Isues with work completed: Immediately after the back sidewalk was poured it rained very hard exposing the rock in the concrete. Instead of replacing the sidewalk Abby applied a coating of quikrete overtop a portion of the sidewalk. This caused a two-toned look to the newly poured sidewalk. During this process footprints were left to dry in the finish. Also, it should be noted that mortar splatter from brick repair were left to dry on the sidewalk. Upon discussing my dissatisfaction with the appearance of the back sidewalk solution to this mess was to stain the sidewalk. I still expressed that the back sidewalk should be torn up and re-done and that I had no interest in painting my back sidewalk every year. Abby assured me that I would not have to re-stain the concrete every year so I was thinking a penetrating stain would be used. However; a valspar stain was painted onto the surface which did not adhere to the surface. I am left with a back sidewalk that is cracking, chipping and pealing. It truly looks like a homeowner project gone bad as it certainly does not even remotely look like a professional was hired.
2. The patio that Abby had poured actually turned out well; however the new surface was power washed in attempt to remove dried mortar off the surface. This process left swirls in the newly brushed finish patio as the water force must have been too high for a newly poured surface. This process ruined the finish of the newly poured patio. Abby's solution was to stain this surface as well; however the stain did not adhere and is severely peeling off and crumbling. Again, the solution Abby came up with to fix their mistake of ruining the finish to begin with is unacceptable.
3. Front Porch - My main concern with my front porch was the loose stones as some of the mortar was cracked. Abby had told me that I needed piers to jack up my front porch as the porch foundation had shifted over time causing the cracks. However; when installed the piers failed to jack up the porch foundation at all. When I questioned why the piers failed to move the porch at all - Abby told me that this was one of the few times this had ever happened. Discussing the issue further Abby stated that maybe the porch was reinforced by rebar somewhere and this was the reason the piers did not jack up the porch. Well, as a matter of fact my porch is reinforced by rebar and can be clearly seen in the basement wall block. Therefore: the recommended piers seemed unnecessary. All that was needed was a brick layer. Also, regarding my front porch - I had a time getting Abby to fix the loose mortar joints ( so stones wouldn't be loose on front sidewalk). In fact, Abby told me that it wasn't in their contract to fix. However; main concern about the front porch was the loose stone. Obviously, since the piers were not needed; Abby should have fixed the real problem - the mortar. Abby finally fixed a few pieces of the loose mortar but in the process ruined the smooth cut edge of my front stone sidewalk and used some very white compound which did not come close to existing finish. Finally upon very much insistence Abby hired a brick layer to fix a few more places where the stone was loose but that still left many stones untouched and still loose. The two areas Abby had fixed still stick out like a sore thumb and Abby told me those areas were done as a "favor" to me since it wasn't in the my contract. Now, I am left to hire someone else to fix their so called favor. One last thing about the front sidewalk - it was power washed half way and left that way. Maybe a small thing in the overall issue of other problems but still unprofessional.
4. Crawlspace Encapsulation -Water is seeping through the cinder block wall that shares the wall of the crawlspace in my basement. Outside one of the underground vents was left open. The rest were bricked up; however the downspouts that discharge 2 feet from the crawlspace were left alone. Also, Abby did not re-build the foundation up or slope it away from the crawlspace. Now, I have a wet encapsulated crawlspace. Simply stated- Abby has left me $26,000 poorer and it looks like I have to spend another $26,000 to fix the same issues Abby was hired to fix. Before hiring Abby Construction I looked up online reviews and found that Abby had completed many local jobs even historical jobs in the Fredericksburg area. Also, Abby construction was going to complete a kitchen remodel in my home as they are one of the local contractors that Lowes uses for their kitchen remodels. I had put my faith and trust in them; however hopefully this review will deter others from making the same mistake."},"url":"https://www.angi.com/companylist/us/va/fredericksburg/abby-construction-co-inc-reviews-6171995.htm"},"position":7},{"@type":"ListItem","item":{"@type":"LocalBusiness","name":"My Plumber Heating Cooling & Electrical","address":{"@type":"PostalAddress","addressRegion":"VA","addressCountry":"US"},"review":{"@type":"Review","author":{"@type":"Person","name":"Stephen C."},"reviewBody":"
My house flooded & after several plumbers were too busy I called MY PLUMBER which was available the next day. They showed up & plunged my down stairs toilet. They charged me over $600. They called me the next day to check on the service & I complained about price (I had already removed the toilet before they came and did not have them reinstall as I had to replace the floor). They said, "OH that price includes snaking the entire sewer line", which was not done. They sent a Rep out quickly which snaked to the street and there was a major blockage. After much discussion and assurance from the Rep I accepted his estimate and he went to work.
I had just paid $5000.00 to have my front yard sodded 3 weeks earlier. I had not even mowed the new grass when all this happened.
When the Rep. told me they would have to dig a trench, He apologized that my beautiful complete and green lawn was going to be damaged but assured me that MY PLUMBER will do the job as neatly as possible AND restore the area with new sod and it was going to be as beautiful as it was before they started. The Rep stayed all day, after getting my OK, removing stone wall landscaping and plants in preparation for the next day of digging so that hardscape would be out of the way and not unnecessarily damaged. A crew showed up the next morning. The crew dug a trench to the street and placed all the dirt next to the trench from one end of my yard to the street, six feet tall, on top of the remaining sod. They were coming back as soon as the sewer line was replaced. The sewer line was replaced the same day so the backfill was to happen the next day.
In the meantime, on the advice of the Rep., I called the county to report a problem with the sewer line in the street. The Rep. said it would be a problem for me in the future. The county came to investigate but wasn't concerned because, according to the County, this was a common practice of MY PLUMBER.
The crew, doing the backfill, did not come back for a week to 10 days. It rained for 2 days and the mound of dirt washed throughout my yard ruining two thirds of the freshly laid sod. Then the crew showed up on a day I wasn't home and backfilled the ditch up to my house. Right up to the bottom of my outside spigot. I could not even hook up my hose. Nor could I replace the landscaping that was removed and ruined.
I called MY PLUMBER and spoke with the manager who said that he would come to look at it. He did, again when I was not home, and said everything looked fine to him. My yard looked like a bald headed man with a Mohawk haircut. This is not a joke.
After many phone calls, I finally was able to negotiate $3000.00 from the balance which is what I had to pay to have new sod laid. I ended up paying a total of $11000.00 + dollars just to rid me of this most stressful situation.
I had new sod laid which didn't take and now it's still only about two thirds of lawn with a 7" valley in the middle from the improper backfilling job. MY PLUMBER did not completely surround the new line with gravel as promised.
The reason I'm writing this review now is because MY PLUMBER called me last week to inform me of a special they're offering past customers for duct and furnace cleaning. I wasn't interested in purchasing a new furnace, I already have one, so I made sure that they will never call me again!
Actually I still have details not mentioned but these bad memories are starting to haunt me. You can fool me once and it's shame on me. Try to fool me again and it's shame on you!
Anybody that wants to use MY PLUMBER's service needs to talk with me first.

Mark arrived quickly to complete his review and work up an estimate in mid June. He delivered his estimate by email quickly. The remaining communication, all be email, was spotty and infrequent. I needed to ask him repeatedly for the dates he would come by to complete the work. Multiple specific questions about anything he might need from us went unanswered, such as township approval, utility line flags, and mail box location. Twice he reported having recently emailed me but I never saw/found those communications. It is possible he had an incorrect email address (.com instead of .net, for example). The project was delayed from late July to mid August to early September. Despite this issue within the project, I still would rehire Mark for additional work if needed. Mark and his crew did an excellent job with the work, once under way. He arrived early on days he did work. He completed the entire project over two days with minimal interruption to us at the house and no contact. Mark brought all needed equipment and left for additional equipment/supplies as needed, without adding any to the price of the project. On day one, he ripped up about 15' feet of drive way, installed the culvert pipe, and repaved the driveway. He very carefully lined up on the culvert and the asphalt. The newly created angle of the driveway is improved over how it sat before and the pipe appears perfectly installed. He also added top soil to all lawn areas disturbed and placed hay over all areas, as well. This included both areas pulled up by the culvert install as well as areas disturbed by the treads of his equipment (excavator). The asphalt was dry less than 24 hours later. As an extra request, Mark installed 3' of brick at the top of the pavement, giving me a Yard of Bricks, as found at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, to drive over every day. This sentimental request did not seem to add any cost to the project and looks great upon completion. On day two, Mark ripped out two planting beds including removal of numerous small to medium sized bushes, mulch, and remaining stone from earlier owners of the house. Finally, the crew cut down and removed 2 large trees including the roots and all limbs without disturbing the newly paved driveway and culvert. Mark and his crew removed all debris and left no trash or issues subsequent to their work. Mark submitted his invoice by email within days of the completion of the work. He had promised during earlier email communication that payment was not due until satisfaction that the work was done. Nothing was paid/required up front. Again, the end result of the work looks great. We are very happy with the installation of both the culvert and the Yard of Bricks. The removal of the shrubs/bushes and trees is complete and looks good. I would definitely hire Weber Excavating again and would recommend him to others. Based on contractor's performance installing a new zone for my irrigation system, I requested they install a French drain in the front/side of my house to try to mitigate the water pooling up on my lawn, which was caused by sub-surface water flowing down from a hill on the adjoining property.
Before contracting to have the French drain installed, I conducted a fair amount of research to familiarize myself with what constituted a typical French drain installation. From my research, it appears that a typical French drain will consist of a trench that is at least 12" deep and 6" wide, with a pitch or slope of about 1 inch per 10 feet of linear run. The trench should be lined with permeable landscape fabric, about 2" of aggregate gravel laid in the bottom of the trench, a 4" perforated French drain pipe with sock then laid on the aggregate gravel, a 2" layer of aggregate gravel then laid over the top and sides of the French drain pipe, the permeable landscape fabric then wrapped over the aggregate gravel, and finally, soil and turf replaced.
As I casually observed the installation of the French drain, it appeared that all the above steps were taken. In addition, the contractor's crew determined that I had a blockage in an existing drain used to route water from my gutters down to the ornamental ditch that the French drain would flow to. Since this existing drain would be running parallel to the new French drain, the crew dug up and replaced this drain also, as they felt it might be contributing to the wet condition I was experiencing in my yard.
All in all, it appeared to be a very good installation as I could see the results (a drier yard) almost immediately (within several weeks).
A month or so after the installation of the French drain, I experienced a power outage in my house. When the Spotsylvania Power Company came out to determine the cause, they found that the insulation on a power line coming into my house had apparently been cut during the French drain installation. In addition to the power line being nicked, the power company employee advised my wife that the French drain pipe had been routed over the power line, and that would cause water to pool under the ground where the line was. I advised Commonwealth's owner of this and he did not seem to be concerned about the situation. A month or so later, my power went out again, and again the Spotsylvania Power Company came out and found another issue with the power line where the French drain crossed it. I observed as they dug up the line and as they dug, a significant amount of water pooled up in that area, so much that they had to take 5-gallon buckets to dip enough of it out so they could get to the power line.
After going the winter and seeing a significant improvement in the amount of water pooling in my front/side yard, I asked Commonwealth to extend the French drain 36 feet across my back yard. The 2-man crew arrived as scheduled at about 7:45 a.m. and began work. I went out to advise them of an electrical line in the vicinity of where they would be digging the trench and observed that the trench was being dug what seemed to be very shallow. I asked them about this and they advised they were digging it 8 inches deep. Since they had apparently done such a good job on the front yard, I thought they knew what they were doing and had a reason for digging it so shallow, so I did not question this any further. At 9:15 a.m., it appeared they had finished, and a few minutes later, they left. I had asked them to dump the leftover dirt in an un-landscaped part of my yard, but a few days later while cutting the lawn, I noticed what appeared to be only bout three wheel barrows of dirt having being dumped. Feeling that the excess dirt from 36 feet of trench should have been significantly more, I took a closer look at the drain and found that it was only 30 feet in length instead of 36 feet, or 20% less than what I had contracted for. I then dug up the upper portion of the drain and found it to be only 5 inches deep, with no landscaping fabric nor any aggregate rock - just a 5 inch deep trench with the perforated French drain with sock laying in it. I then went about half-way down the drain and dug up another section, where I found the same condition as I had found in the first section I dug up. I then went to the beginning of the extension and dug it up, finding it to be about 8 inches deep there with a little aggregate rock at the bottom, but no landscape fabric.
I contacted the owner about this and he came out and concurred with what I had found and advised that this was not an acceptable installation. He then sent another crew out to rectify the situation.
I was not at home when the second crew finished their work, but it was apparent that they had not installed the additional 6 feet (20%) of drain called for in the contract. I again contacted the owner and he sent the crew back to install the additional 6 feet. While observing them install this additional 6 feet of drain, I noticed they did not line the trench with landscape fabric. I asked them about it and they then lined this 6 feet with the fabric and finished the project. After they left, I went back and dug up some of the previous section to see if the trench had been lined with landscape fabric when they re-did the original extension. They had not, instead they had installed a layer of landscape fabric only on top of the aggregate rock instead of completely around it.
I contacted the owner again on this and he advised (paraphrasing somewhat here) that the landscape cloth as well as the sock covering the pipe are designed to keep dirt material from being able to enter the drainage system. Clearly having dirt enter the pipe would cause clogging and slow water entry. The fabric location will not hinder the performance of the pipe and it's ability to allow water entry into the perforated pipe.
Doing some more research on the landscaping fabric, I found, from several authoritative sources, that it is installed to keep dirt out of the gravel, which preserves the porosity of the gravel, promotes percolation of water through the gravel, and prevents erosion of the ground surrounding the drain.
I again contacted the owner that my concern was not the location of the landscape fabric, but the lack of it being placed in the trench to line it before the gravel and drain were installed. I further advised him that if he felt that not installing the landscaping fabric before placing the gravel in the trench was acceptable, I would go with that and consider it a completed project. As of yet, since May 21st, I have not heard back from the owner, so I assume he feels leaving the landscape fabric out of 30 feet of the drain is an acceptable installation.
Back to the front yard. After my issues with the installation of the drain in my back yard, I dug up the drain in the area where I had the power line issue. As I dug, it began to fill with water at a level over the drain pipe. I dug up a section about two feet wide by five feet long, all of it filling up with water at a level over the drain pipe. I confirmed that the trench had been completely lined with landscape cloth, which was not done for the 30 foot section in the back yard. I confirmed that the drain was routed over the power line and that there was about a 2 inch rise in the level of the pipe as it crossed over the power line, negating about 20 feet of the typical 1 inch downward slope per 10 feet of linear run. Apparently, the Spotsylvania electric employee was correct when he advised that the routing of the drain over the power line would cause water to pool in that location.

Stone and Gravel questions, answered by experts
If you’re attempting to mix and pour your own mortar, expect to pay between $5 to $10 for an 80-pound bag of mix. The cost to repair mortar, however, can range from $300 to $500 for a 20-square-foot wall. The larger the area and the more extensive the repair, the higher the cost.
Yes, depending on the type of pavers you have, you may need a specific type of sealant. For example, concrete pavers will bond differently than clay pavers or faux stone pavers and will demand a different type of sealer. If you’re unsure of the material and what type of sealant you need, you can contact the company that laid your pavers down for you.
In some cases, black stains on brick are caused by organic substances like algae and mold. However, it's more likely that the black spots you're noticing on your bricks come from carbon from vehicle exhaust or soot. Black stains can usually be removed by scrubbing the brick with a brush and masonry cleaner or power washing.
While painting can certainly change the look of a chimney, you should think twice about giving your brick chimney the old landlord special.
Painting brick is porous, meaning it’s full of tiny holes that can soak up moisture. Those holes also allow it to dry, though. So, when you paint it, you trap any moisture inside, providing an opportunity for mold, mildew, and water damage.
Paint also shows wear faster than naked brick. This means that once you paint a brick surface, you’ll have to keep painting it to maintain a clean look. A paint job is also harder to undo on brick because of its porous nature. Once you paint it, it’s hard to go back without some serious power washing—another added cost.
The white stains you see on your bricks are likely efflorescence, which is salt and lime buildup. To remove efflorescence stains, simply brush them away with a stiff brush. For larger, more stubborn stains, scrub the stains with a water-detergent solution.
