"Doug Vickstrom did end up completing the project and stayed on budget. And I like my new shed/goat barn. But unfortunately his rudeness and lack of communication skills overshadowed the good. It was a stressful time. We agreed on a completion date before signing the contract. He even told me the project would only take 2 weeks to complete. But he drug his feet, only working a handful of days, and finally finished 2 months late! So the “On Time” part of his slogan is a lie."

The most significant factor in knowing whether to repair or replace your dock is the extent of the damage and its age. If you have minor cracks on a few boards and the dock is less than 15 years old, it'll likely be worth repairing the damaged part. However, it's time to replace this essential water feature if you have significant damage, such as rotting wood in multiple areas, warps or cracks in the dock supports, or a damaged foundation.

Bulging walls, cracks in the seawall's top or side, and the appearance of a seawall "pulling away" are all signs that you need repairs or reconstruction. The area around the seawall can also provide clues. For instance, you may notice water bubbling over in areas of your yard if your seawall has holes or cracks. The soil around the seawall may also appear to be sloping or sinking.

In most areas, dock builders need some type of license. In some states, only a general construction license might be necessary, while a marine construction license is required in others.   • Do you need to follow any specific rules or guidelines? Check with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association (NOAA) Office for Coastal Management for any guidelines you’ll need to follow, including size and type restrictions.

Boat docks need maintenance every year. Get an inspection at the end of each warm weather season, and remove the dock from the water if possible (if it’s made of wood) when not in use. You can also treat the wood to lessen the impact of moisture damage.
