Portable generator would not start. The company quickly picked up the generator; however, it took two weeks for them to begin the repair. When the work was completed--cleaning the carburetor, the person who called thoroughly explained all the work that was needed. More importantly, he explained how to avoid the problem in the future. The generator was returned in good order and ready for the next power outage!

Repairman took things apart and discovered a portion of one part had been chewed through. He ordered replacement part and dishwasher has been working fine since that was installed. He did market a general service plan/warranty offer while on site but was not over-the-top with the sales effort. Work was completed promptly and any mess removed.

Good overall service. Took a little longer to complete service than originally estimated but it was a busy time of year for this type of business. I'll use them again,

This experience went 100% from the point of first contact on the phone, to promptness, courtesty, knowledge of what needed to be done and cost. I will definitely use this business again without hesitation.

They gave me a quote on the spot and had it repaired within a few hours. They helped me load and unload it from my car. The owner is super nice and friendly. Would definitely recommend them.

After my mower made an unusual sound that I thought was an engine problem, I stopped at two other service providers first because they are closer to my home. The first said it would be four weeks before they could look at my mower. The second was in the middle of relocating their business, would not be open for several days, and had a wait of two weeks. At Knabe, they had a wait of two weeks, but offered to take a quick look and immediately diagnosed a loose blade, something I could have discovered easily enough but never thought to look for. They said there was no charge and I was on my way in less than five minutes, with the tech's thoughts on why my engine sounded a little rough to him. I'll probably take my mower in at the end of the season and have him tune it up, but for now, I won't need to borrow my neighbor's mower again.

  • Keith's Sharpening Service

It's been a few yrs since my push mower was "tuned-up" (oil, filter & spark plug change & blade sharpened). I live in Bon Air, VA (southside), and there are only one or two shops that offer mower tune-ups (Terry's and Sears). Unfortunately you have to bring your mower to them (which can be challenging if all you own is a sedan), wait 2-3 weeks to get it back, pay $70-$80, then find a way to transport it back to your home. There's another guy, "Bob", who advertises in the Chesterfield Observer newspaper, who will come to your house to do the mower tune-up, but he charges $85 (or $45 just to sharpen the mower blade). Considering a NEW push mower typically retails for less than $200, and used mowers can be purchased for $100 or less, paying almost $100 for a tune-up is ridiculous in my opinion. Changing my mower's air filter & spark plug was easy, and I figured I could use the owner's manual to help me do the oil change, so the only thing I REALLY needed done by someone else was the blade sharpening. I looked on Craigslist to see if anyone was offering a mower blade sharpening service, and I came across Keith's Sharpening in Mechanicsville (near the Hanover Industrial Park). Apparently Keith sharpens nearly everything and his entire price list was on Craigslist, including $6 for to sharpen a lawnmower blade and $6.50 to sharpen a chainsaw blade. I gave Keith a call using the number posted on Craigslist. He answered promptly. When I mentioned I was located about 30 mins away, he offered to meet me midway since he worked (his "real" job) in downtown Richmond. He also gave me some verbal instruction on how to remove the mower blade, since I hadn't done it previously. About a minute after we hung up, Keith called me back and offered to pick the mower up at my home, sharpen the blade, change the oil, blow out the air filter, clean-up the entire mower and return it to me within 24 hrs, for $25 plus a $7 pick-up & delivery fee. It was exactly what I needed, at a great price! Keith showed up at my home later that day to pick up the mower. While he was there, he asked if there was anything else I needed sharpened, like a chainsaw, ax, knives, etc. Since the cost was only $6.50, I gave him my small Stihl chainsaw to sharpen too (it had never been sharpened in the 3 yrs I've owned it). I also went across the street to ask my neighbor if he needed his mower serviced (for $25). He jumped on the deal as well, and brought his mower over to Keith's pickup truck. Keith was very professional, giving us both separate invoice slips. We didn't have to pay him until the next day when he returned our equipment. He had done even more than requested, mentioning there was no blade oil in my chainsaw so he filled it up at no extra charge. I told him I wasn't aware the chain oil needed replenishing. He informed me it does -- frequently -- and showed me where to pour it. He had also lubed and tightened my chainsaw blade. Keith told me the next time I had my mower serviced it would likely need a replacement blade because the current one was nearly worn out. As he was leaving, I told Keith I would be submitting this review to Angie's List.

It worked roughly at first and Joseph came by my house and recleaned the carb. It now works fine. Joseph literally went the extra mile to make sure I was happy. I would use West End Small Engine Repair as a first choice shop again.
