The general consensus is that two coats of stain are required and since the cedar is siding, a third coat of sealant is always a good idea. If water beads on the surface, it needs additional time to dry—in fact, it can take weeks or even months to fully dry. As soon as the wood absorbs water on the surface, it is ready to be painted or stained.

While oil-based paint is also durable, it's prone to fading,  making it not as good of an option if you live someplace with extremely high heat.
