When I inspected the mortar work, I noticed a nickel was embedded in the concrete. I asked Jeff about this and he said it was his "calling-card". Personally, I found it kind of tacky and unprofessional. But the top of the chimney isn't readily visible so I didn't dwell on it. As the concrete settled in the first week, a large crack appeared. Concerned that this could translate into water damage, I reached out to Jeff and asked if he would touch-up the mortar. He said that he would perform the touch-up; however, a couple of weeks passed. I followed up on 9/20/12 and received excuses. I followed up again on 11/15/12 and Jeff did finally come out to address the crack. Despite the necessary follow-up work, I would have been satisfied with my experience. But that wasn't the end of the story. A couple years later, I was cutting back over-grown forsythia bushes, trying to reclaim some yard space. That's when I discovered a mound of concrete piled up between the bushes. I've lived in my house for a long time. The concrete wasn't there when the forsythia bushes were planted more than 20 years earlier. Some of the concrete pieces still had chunks of brick attached. And the pieces were large enough that I could fit a few together and determine, with confidence, that the concrete represented the original mortar on the chimney. If Jeff had needed me (the customer) to dispose of the old concrete, I could-have and would-have done so. Not only did Jeff not handle the disposal of the old material (like the average contractor would), he dumped the concrete in an obscure location on my property, hiding it from me. For the record, I took pictures of this pile of concrete I discovered and would happily upload them to the site if I could. This guy knows his trade. But I encourage you to watch out for the corners he might cut.

They asked we bring pictures of the area and measurements by and they'd "be glad" to help us design the area. We took pictures and drawings of beds by on April 27th and left with the man who we were told handled them. We told him we were going out of town so not to rush that it would be two weeks before we were back to purchase the plants. He told us "that would give him to get together something nice that he was used to having to use backs of envelopes while people waited". We returned on May 11, 2013 and told the lady (very unfriendly) that we were there to get plan and purchase plants. She walked off and about 20 minutes later the man tells my husband they've been really busy and they haven't gotten to ours. He assured my husband he would be calling him the next week. Another week goes by and on May 20th my husband calls and the "young sounding girl" was very apologetic and told him someone would be calling him back that day. Two days later on the 22nd we call again and we're told they don't know why we haven't heard from them and they'll tell one of the owners to call us that day. A man who stated he was one of the owners called back on the 23rd and was very abrupt to the point of rude. He acted like we were the problem by calling about the plans (it's been almost 30 days to get something we were told they normally did while customer waited) and the man's statement was "it's obvious we cannot meet your needs so hopefully some other nursery can". Never stated why couldn't get plans together and never even offered to return the photos we took him. I realize the $1,000 budget we had is nothing compared to what they make off the Greenbrier and their corporate accounts but keep treating the $1,000 jobs like this and they won't have any left. Will also say while we were left waiting on the second trip I went looking for hanging baskets. WOW! They were charging $29.99 for petunias, new guinea inpatients, and begonias in much smaller baskets than I had seen at another nursery for $19.99 or at Country Corner for $11.99.

My planting beds were so overgrown with weeds that it would have taken me at least a week to cut and remove everything. They finished the entire job in less than two days and cleaned everything before they left the scene. They even changed the bulbs in my security lights at no charge. The lights are mounted on the front and back of the house, about 25 feet up. I didn't have a ladder that long to do it myself, so their efforts were appreciated. I was so pleased with Robbin's work that I hired her to do my regular lawn service. My only complaint was the poor communication. She was late with her estimate and arrived for work a day late, without a call or email to advise me. I've grown used to that kind of customer response here in Roanoke. As a professional communicator and small business owner, I'd never treat a customer or potential customer that way. Landscapers typically charge $25 to $50 per person per hour, which equals around $50 to $100 per hour for a two-person crew. These rates can vary depending on your location, the size of staff needed for the job, and overall job type. For example, a larger crew will be needed for structural additions and hardscaping versus planting flowers.
When it comes to landscapers, licensing laws vary. Landscaping architects are required to be licensed in all 50 states, whereas traditional landscaping contractors are not typically required to hold a certification. You’ll likely be working with a landscaping contractor for most residential projects. If you are redesigning your whole yard or adding in hardscape features, you will work with a landscaping architect at some point during the project. Be sure to check our state licensing tool to review the local landscaper guidelines.
As you browse our pro listings, take note of the “Angi Approved” badge. Angi Approved businesses meet our standards for certification which include:
The owner, principal, or relevant manager passed a criminal background check
Required to have applicable state and local licenses
Maintain an average star rating of 3.0 or better on our network, if they have at least one review
Paying to advertise their services
Meeting any other eligibility criteria required by Angi
Keep in mind licensing is different from certifications. A license is a legal requirement to operate a business, while certifications are voluntary.
Lawn irrigation is the process of getting water to your lawn, grass and all, for it to grow. There are five main types of lawn irrigation methods:
Manual irrigation puts you in charge of the flow of water. Using a sprinkler head on your hose is best to evenly distribute the water across your entire lawn. This doesn’t take much time but requires you to be physically outside holding the hose.
Above-ground sprinklers attach to your hose and rotate or oscillate around your lawn. Since these are above-ground, they’ll need to be moved when it’s time to mow, and depending on the size of your property, you might need to move it around your yard for full coverage.
In-ground sprinklers are flush with the ground when not in use but pop up above the ground level when it's time to water the lawn. Piping for these sprinklers is all found underground, and there are different types of sprinkler heads for different uses and lawn sizes.
Drip irrigation involves drip lines that are more efficient than sprinklers for more extensive lawns. This involves a lot of digging since they are installed underground, but it makes it easy for you to mow.
Rainwater collection and irrigation uses nature’s precipitation to water your lawn. This option might not be available in every area since semi-reliable rainfall is needed, though the barrels for this system can range from 15 gallons to 10,000 gallons or more.
The cost of a lawn sprinkler system is $2,550 for the average homeowner. However, this price can range from $350 to $5,000 or more, depending on the type of sprinkler system you install, the size of your yard, and the type of sprinkler heads you choose. For example, rotating or oscillating sprinkler heads are more expensive than stationary ones, making the cost for one sprinkler head $2.50 to $30 each. Likewise, a yard that is 1/4 of an acre in size averages a total average price of $2,460; however, a one-acre yard averages a cost of $9,840.
Landscaping costs around $3,500 but varies widely from $200 to $14,000. Factors that play a part in your final landscaping price tag include:
Location
Yard size
Project size
Materials
Land preparation
Type of landscaping
Considering so many factors, it’s not surprising that the overall costs can differ. A typical landscaping project is flower bed installation, which averages between $800 and $3,000. However, landscape lighting installation is a higher-end project, with a price tag of $2,000 to $6,000.
