Many ceiling fan-rated electrical boxes tend to be made of metal. However, some electrical boxes may also be made of heavy-duty plastic that is reinforced with metal support structures. Consider your ceiling height when selecting a ceiling fan. Rooms with ceilings under eight feet high will do well with low-profile ceiling fans, also known as flush-mount or hugger ceiling fans. If your home has cathedral ceilings or ceilings between 10 and 25 feet high, you’ll need a large ceiling fan with a heavy-duty motor to get adequate air circulation.

The ceiling box should have an inscription stating that it supports the operation of the ceiling fan. If it’s not included, you should purchase a fan-rated junction box and a fan brace so you can install the box between joists, where it’ll provide the most support for the fan’s weight.
