"Great. Mike and I talked briefly through Angie's List messaging system, I described what I needed, he quoted an hourly rate along with estimate of time needed, we set up a time and were good to go. Showed up on time, I explained what I needed done showing him each item and he got to work. Kitchen faucet: I thought it was just a bad washer or o-ring, but it turned out to be a plastic part (that interacted with a metal part) that had worn out deep inside the faucet, which he found by disassembling the faucet. Showed me where it was and what it did, and unfortunately there was no replacement part available. Also explained that he had seen black/rusty water when he was taking things apart and the valve/lines under the sink needed replacing too. (This explained some odd tastes we were getting from the sink water.) He asked me what type of faucet and quality level I wanted (cheapest, most expensive, middle), went out and bought it plus the other needed parts, returned and installed it all. Works great and the water doesn't taste odd anymore. What I thought was a simple job turned out to be more complex and longer. Bathroom sink faucets: Fairly straight forward replacement, though he did have to shorten the connecting rod connecting the drain plug to the post you pull to close the drain. There isn't much space under the cabinets! Also pointed out a small leak in the pipes underneath, which he fixed as well. And he cleaned out all the build up in one of the drains so it drains promptly now. Toilet: Replaced the clogged valve in a jiffy along with the feed line and the tank hardware, and now, instead of taking 20 minutes to refill, it refills in a short time, stops when it's suppose to stop, and doesn't leak. Bathroom: Removed the towel rack, moved and leveled the shelf. And, he tightened the nut holding the toilet seat cover onto the toilet without even being asked, just because he noticed it. (We had lived with it after my attempts to tighten it hadn't worked.) Kitchen cabinet: Removed the drawer and pointed out that the wheel rails can spread at the back, from use. Closed the spread and now the drawer slides in and out perfectly. (I felt dumb for not having figured that out, but now I know.) Cleanliness: He had canvas drop cloths to catch any dirt or grime he generated as well as for protecting the floor. Had a trash bag for any trash generated (such as the faucet boxes) and used it as he went, rather than gathering the trash at the end. Honesty: Even though he ended up doing several extra things (valves and lines under kitchen sink, fixed a leak under bathroom sinks, toilet seat cover nut), I did not get the vibe that he was finding these just to do them and earn more money. The kitchen faucet issue agreed with what we had already observed, and the leak in the bathroom sink cabinet was real and (obviously!) needed fixing. And the seat cover nut, well, that was just a nice touch. All in all, I am very pleased with the results. Very pleased with his attitude and willingness to dig in to get the job done and working until it was. He explained the extra work needed as he found it, and didn't bother me unduly (I had my own work to do, as well, working remotely that day). And when I stepped over to see how it was going, he gave a precise update. He had all the tools needed (most of which I don't have, such as plumber's putty), and he had several spare parts in his truck so he wasn't constantly driving over to Home Depot. In short, he came prepared. Turned out to be 8 hours of work instead of the original estimate of 5 or less. Charged by the hour, and for the faucet and valve and bit of pipe installed (about $200 in parts). I like that flexibility, rather than charging a flat rate for a block of time (4 hours or 8 hours is what I've seen elsewhere on Angie's List site). The rate was competitive and I tipped him as well. The amount indicated in this review is for parts and labor only."

"Justin did an outstanding job on removing the old shower with great care and professionalize. He did an outstanding job on the build out of the new shower. He subcontracted the tile work out to a great tile craftsman but not the cleanest craftsman. They blow tile dust all over our basement but the tile job was good. However, once the dust all over the place was brought to Justin attention, he personally clean and paid for a cleaning service to clean our basement.

"It was an absolute pleasure working with everyone at American Home Contractors (AHC). I had a very customized project requiring a very specific type of siding since I live in Georgetown, DC, and we have several layers of historic oversight required prior to permit issuance. In other words, this neighborhood is extremely difficult to work in due to all the regulations required to obtain a legal permit to do any external work on these historic homes. John Roda, AHC’s Project Coordinator, was my primary contact at AHC over the many months it took me to finally obtain my permit and begin deciding on how to obtain the siding necessary to meet permit specifications. He was extremely competent and patient throughout the entire process and worked closely with me and the Historic Preservation Office contact for Georgetown to ensure that we were meeting strict product demands while also staying within my budget. So many other companies either refused to work with me or were incapable of working with me on this project due to the difficulties I encountered while navigating the permitting process alone. AHC is different. They have stamina, courage, and endurance. High-quality people + high-quality materials= high-quality job with the added bonus of a decent price for what you are getting. In the end, my home looks absolutely stunning. Even more importantly, I now have the peace of mind that my home has good quality siding and is structurally sound. AHC actually had to remove the illegal Masonite siding (has a class-action lawsuit for the damage it has caused homes in the past) that was likely installed in ~1970-1980 without the issuance of a legal permit when the old pebble dash stucco was removed. They installed some beautiful cedar siding in its place. I spent many sleepless nights worrying about the damage the Masonite might have done to the furring strips and the old 1880s substrate in the lead-up to the installation. Thankfully, all was well and the installation was extremely efficient and successful. The AHC siding installers arrived at 7 am on the day of installation and worked tirelessly until 7 pm. We initially estimated the job would take ~ three days, and they finished in only a day. Their work ethic and workmanship on the installation were truly astounding, especially in an era when simple tasks are often drawn out and good work ethic and professionalism are touted ad nauseam by companies but rarely mobilized in practice. As a first time homeowner, I have gone through a lot of mental anguish with my home’s historic idiosyncrasies, particularly when I am in the process of gathering estimates for necessary maintenance work and wait weeks or even months to hear back from companies that overcharge for low-quality materials and unenthusiastic, inefficient labor. AHC is different. I heard back with my first estimate within days (during fall 2020 with the COVID pandemic raging on), the materials were excellent, the price was fair, and John was very enthusiastic and optimistic throughout the project’s duration even despite the multiplicity of hurdles we encountered with the ever-changing demands of the historic preservation specialists. The only upside of gathering competing estimates and meeting with all those contractors I met with initially is that when I finally found a gold standard contractor (AHC), I experienced the sheer relief of having a reliable contractor for my current and future projects and to wholeheartedly recommend to friends and family. I am so grateful to everyone at AHC who worked so hard to make what really seemed impossible and out-of-reach finally materialize. If you have a tough (or simple) project that you need to be done right and are torn between companies or are just starting your search for a reliable, five-star contractor, I can highly, highly recommend AHC based on my experience with them. "We had a break-in, and needed a new basement door and framing installed immediately. This was the only company that confirmed from the start that they would be able to come the same day, and arrived in the time window they estimated. We were obviously a bit shaken up from the break-in, and the contractor went with us to Home Depot to pick out a more secure door. He installed both a new door and a glass/metal exterior security door in a very short amount of time considering how much work was to be done. He stayed until the job was done to our satisfaction, and answered any questions we had. Probably the best customer service experience we have ever had.
