"Tom painted our upper and lower kitchen cabinets, a bedroom and bathroom and gave new life to our home. Our old pine cabinets were outdated and dreary. His work is professional, thorough and he’s a great guy! We highly recommend Tom for any painting work."

Small jobs welcome

"Angie's List turned up Robin's Cleaning Service as a possible contractor for carpet cleaning. We went with her since she's independent and relatively local (Gretna). She came today, worked hard for over two hours to clean our Master BR and closet, lower staircase and roughly 1/4 of the lower living area, and did a lovely, attentive and thorough job for $225. Very pleasant--does carpets and other cleaning, painting, landscaping, mowing and pressure washing between morning and evening school bus driving for Gretna public schools (all three levels). Just a really sweet lady whom we enjoyed getting to know. If you have odd jobs, give her a chance. Robin Hall, 434-728-0529, is highly recommended! Pressure Washing questions, answered by experts

These parts of the house are okay to pressure wash:

  • Natural wood decking that is not stained or painted

  • Siding made of vinyl, aluminum, and cement

  • Concrete

  • Most children’s toys

  • Outdoor furniture

  • Trash cans and recycle bins

Depending on the amount of experience you have with power washing or pressure washing, hiring a professional is likely a better option. Using a pressure washer requires a bit of know-how to avoid damaging siding, trim, roofing shingles, and even the seals on your windows. Holding the pressure washer too close to the material you’re cleaning can cause damage to the surface. You can wash your home’s exteriors with a garden hose, but high-pressure cleaning should be done by professionals.

Whether you need to winterize your pressure washer depends on where it will be stored. If it's kept in a location where temperatures could drop to freezing, any liquid left in the water pump can freeze, expand, and cause severe damage to the machine. To prevent this, you can add antifreeze to the pump. While emptying the machine with compressed air is an alternative, it can be a tedious process and may not remove all the liquid. If you can store the pressure washer in a relatively warm place with no risk of freezing, you won't need to add antifreeze. However, regardless of storage conditions, it is good practice to empty the gas chamber and refresh the oil before storing it for the winter.

We don’t recommend pressuring washing clapboard siding. At high levels of pressure, a pressure washer can damage wood siding permanently. Pressure washing can also make it easier to drive water into the cracks of clapboard (which are recommended for easier drainage), causing moisture damage.

If you think your clapboard siding is so dirty it could benefit from pressure washing, we suggest contacting a pressure wash cleaning service and getting a quote on a wood siding project. Some siding manufacturers recommend never pressure washing because it can force water behind the siding.

If you’ve looked at power washing before and after photos, you might be wondering if this option isn’t the better cleaning solution for a wood fence. In fact, it just might be, especially if you’re struggling with issues like mold or embedded dirt. Keep in mind that the only difference between these two methods is that power washing uses hot water and pressure washing doesn’t, but sometimes such a small distinction can have a huge impact.
