Small jobs welcome

"Angie's List turned up Robin's Cleaning Service as a possible contractor for carpet cleaning. We went with her since she's independent and relatively local (Gretna). She came today, worked hard for over two hours to clean our Master BR and closet, lower staircase and roughly 1/4 of the lower living area, and did a lovely, attentive and thorough job for $225. Very pleasant--does carpets and other cleaning, painting, landscaping, mowing and pressure washing between morning and evening school bus driving for Gretna public schools (all three levels). Just a really sweet lady whom we enjoyed getting to know. If you have odd jobs, give her a chance. Robin Hall, 434-728-0529, is highly recommended! House Cleaning questions, answered by experts

The best way to clean kitchen cabinets is to use a soft cloth soaked in warm water and mild dish soap. For areas that require a stronger solution, a mixture of baking soda and vinegar is the best choice. If your cabinets are made of sealed hardwood, you can deep clean them using a steam cleaner, but other cabinet materials are exempt from this type of cleaning.

Whether you tip before or after a carpet cleaning depends on when you’re available. If you’re home when they finish up, you can give them their tip after. However, if you need to leave before they’re done or if you won’t be home at all, you can prepare the tip beforehand and leave it for them in an envelope.

No, soap scum doesn’t cause mildew, but the two substances often appear in the same spots. If soap scum is left to sit long enough and if the area stays damp, mildew and mold can grow on top of it. When these fungi combine with soap scum, your surface can become discolored, grimier, smelly, and more difficult to clean.

No, vinegar does not disinfect hardwood floors safely. A vinegar and water solution can effectively clean many hard surfaces, but it is acidic enough to break down the finish on hardwood floors and damage the wood underneath. Over time this will dull the floors and reduce their shine. A damaged finish will also leave floors susceptible to moisture and other problems.

Hydrogen peroxide is an effective stain remover for many kinds of stains on porcelain, ceramic, stone, and stainless steel sinks. Always consult your manufacturer’s instructions to ensure hydrogen peroxide won’t damage your sink. To remove stains with hydrogen peroxide, saturate the corner of a cloth or sponge with peroxide and gently dab at the stain until it lightens.
