"On Christmas Eve, with 8 degrees, a pipe burst in my son's house, flooding the wall and floors. I called Sullivan Plumbing and left a message. Knowing that every plumber in town would be swamped, I had to have faith I'd hear back. At 9 PM I got a call from Will, who explained they had been going full bore all day, but said he would try to get there that night. I told him no, because he and the other techs were exhausted and cold. He made arrangements with my son to have a tech come at 9 AM on Christmas morning. Liam was there on time and ready to work, fixed the pipe, wrapped it to make sure it did not freeze again, and was an absolute lifesaver! I was so surprised that someone would come out on Christmas morning!! I recommend them highly! From now on I will use Sullivan Plumbing for ALL my plumbing needs. Their phone number is 434-846-4466. Keep that number handy if you want excellent plumbing service by techs who care and are first class."

"The contractors from freedom heating and Air were very fast and efficient with their work. They came in and took a look at what needed to be done. Took about 5 to 10 minutes to go get the equipment they needed and in less than a hour they were done. My wife and I are very pleased with the choice of hiring them to fix a leaky pipe that was leading to our gas furnace and the price for doing the job was well in our budget."

"Wonderfully from talking to representative, ordering windows and window installment. Windows were installed in one day by a very knowledgeable installer. Hard worker, conscience, courteous and friendly. We would recommend this company to all of our friends."

Plumbing questions, answered by experts

National emergency plumbers usually have greater availability to address emergencies because they have more professionals at their disposal, but local plumbers may be located closer to your home and can arrive faster. We recommend contacting one or two local plumbers first to see how quickly they can arrive. Move ahead with the service if it’s within a reasonable time frame. If not, contact a national company to see if they can get out more quickly. National companies sometimes outsource work to third parties, which can often mean faster response times.

Sometimes when a pipe bursts in a house, it makes a clang or popping noise; however, that doesn’t mean you’ll hear it. Newer pipes tend to be quieter than older pipes. Plus, a pipe can easily burst out of earshot, especially if it’s a floor or two away from you.

If you do hear an unusual popping noise, consider hiring a plumber to inspect your pipes. Most of the time, you’re more likely to notice a burst pipe either from a visible leak or because water won’t run out of your tap properly.

If methods like hot water or a plunger don’t work on your clogged drain, you can snake your drain to dislodge the plug. This can be a messy process, taking some physical effort and additional time over the other drain-clearing options. You can purchase a drain snake at a hardware store and choose from handheld options or those attached to a drill. Just work slowly, and be ready to call a plumber if you’re unable to reach the clog from your drain or P-trap.

The most common situation in which you should turn off the main water shut-off valve is if there’s a leak in your home, such as in the kitchen or bathroom. Turning off the water supply can prevent further water damage.

You may want to turn off the valve before leaving for an extended period, in case of leaks or pipe bursts while you’re gone. If you’re going to work on plumbing fixtures or appliances, it’s also a good idea to shut off the main valve to ensure no water flow during repairs or installation.

The general rule of thumb is that you should clean your pipes every 18 to 22 months, although the process for cleaning depends on the severity of the issue and what type of pipes you have.

That being said, regular maintenance on your pipes can help prevent the need for a full-on replacement and help extend the lifetime of your pipes by quite a bit.
