"Gordon Frazier tree service did a phenomenal job. They removed very large trees in a challenging environment surrounded by decks and awnings. They meticulously lowered every tree piece and took care to not damage anything. They finished ahead of schedule and by far had the best price around. We even added extra trees to the project and they obliged at a more than reasonable price. I would not hesitate to utilize their services again and would recommend them to anyone in need of tree service!"

"I am impressed with H&C on their prompt service. They asked me questions about the task to ensure my satisfaction. They do excellent work with the preparation of the task. They removed a dead tree from my front yard and they did it very efficiently and professionally. I was impressed with Heidi who takes the calls. She is friendly, courteous and patient with the customer. They aim to please the customer and they are friendly and courteous, which is important to me."

"I only write a review when a company has gone above and beyond with their service. I know there are so many companies to choose from but if you want an honest, fair, professional, caring and truly knowledgeable company this one is 100% the one to choose. You can't go wrong with them. I used the text message option to get in contact (that was a great option) with them and within an hour they showed up at the door ready to help with my tree problem. I learned more about trees in 10 mins than I've known my whole life. If you want the best company out there you definitely should use Virginia Tree Specialist. ? If there was a 10 star ? rating I would pick that because that's what they deserve"

"The owner was very professional and he had a large crew. Did a quick and clean job. They removed 2 trees in my back yard. Would not even know that there were trees there. I would highly recommend to everyone!"

Customers say: Quality work

"The tree although it was dying was special to our family. Mr. Garcia took the time to cut a special souvenir that showed the rings of the tree. I really appreciated that. Also, every member of his team was polite and left the front yard cleaner than they found it. I highly recommend this service."

"This team did an outstanding job cleaning up the tangled mess of fallen trees and vines from a storm a few months earlier. Not only were they able to start a day early, but they completed it the same day. My request was to remove 3 fallen trees (one was a very large white oak), but they volunteered to clean up all of the trees and vines along the road! I was duly impressed with their efficiency, professionalism, and demeanor! I have worked with several different tree service professionals in the area, but this team did the best job, by far, of any of the others and exceeded my expectations! I highly recommend them!"

Tree Service questions, answered by experts

Yes, it’s okay to trim low branches on a tree, also known as limbing up or raising the crown. Essentially, you’ll trim the lower third of the tree (trunk) and leave the upper two-thirds of the tree (crown). Arborists recommend trimming 20% of a tree’s leaves per season for two to three seasons. Trimming low branches allows light to flow through the tree, increasing circulation and making the tree stronger and healthier.

There are several methods to hollow out a tree stump, and the best one depends on your tools, experience, and priorities. Common methods include using a chisel and hammer, a chainsaw, or burning.

  • Chisel and Hammer: This is often considered the easiest approach for those with limited tools or experience, though it is the most time-consuming.

  • Chainsaw: Using a chainsaw is the fastest method, but it comes with significant safety risks, especially for inexperienced users.

  • Burning: This can be an effective method, but it is not recommended unless you can first drill holes into the stump. Without holes, the stump will be difficult to light and may not burn completely through.

A power drill with at least a ⅜-inch diameter bit can make the job quicker and easier, regardless of the primary method. While you can use a chisel or chainsaw without a drill, it will require more time and effort. Always wear protective goggles and thick gloves, as splinters are an inevitable risk.

Ideally, you should wait to prune until trees have gone dormant in late fall to early winter. The worst times to prune trees are early fall and late summer, as pruning them so close to dormancy makes it difficult for the tree recover before it goes dormant for the season.

Talking with a septic pro before planting trees near your tank is best to ensure the roots won’t interfere with your septic system. However, there is an easy way to figure out where to plant a tree—but you’ll need to know how tall it can get when it’s fully grown. For instance, if the tree can reach 50 feet, plant it at least 50 feet from your septic system.

Yes, it is essential to confirm that any tree service company you hire is properly insured before they begin work. Tree removal, trimming, and pruning are dangerous jobs, and proper insurance protects you, your home, and the company from liability in case of accidents or damage. Look for a company that carries both general liability and workers’ compensation insurance, and do not hire one that cannot provide proof of coverage. When browsing for professionals, you can look for indicators like an “Angi Approved” badge, which signifies that the business meets standards like holding applicable licenses and passing a background check. Keep in mind that a license is a legal requirement to operate, while certifications are typically voluntary.
