"The 3 man crew were excellent. The window replacement occurred during one very long day. They repaired and reconfigured the sun room over the next four days. They were efficient, courteous and kept the job site clean at the end of every day. Very pleased with the work performed. Recommended."

"SUPER SATISFIED! The Pierce Siding & Window crew arrived on time, and worked tirelessly to remove and replace 12 windows in an old house. They encountered some problems with past owners' DIY repairs but powered through, paying meticulous attention to each window, making sure each one was set correctly, sealed, and finished. They cleaned up the work site - you'd never know they'd been there except for the sparkling new windows. Midway through the job, Mr. Pierce advised me that the agreed-upon price was going to be several hundred dollars LOWER than originally specified, due to an ordering error. So, in addition to super-professional, knowledgeable work please also know you are dealing with an honest man with great integrity. Hire this company with complete confidence."

Windows questions, answered by experts

Installing glass block windows has benefits and disadvantages, as with most materials. The pros and cons can vary depending on the type of glass block and the window location.

Pros

  • Maintains privacy while letting light into the bathroom

  • Energy efficient

  • Sealed to prevent drafts

  • Aesthetically pleasing

  • Strong and secure

Cons

  • Costly to install

  • Challenging installation

  • Challenging repair

Not every home needs window capping. Whether or not you need to cap your windows depends on your climate and window frame materials. Wooden windows should have window capping if moisture is a problem. Arid climates like the Southwest may not need window capping due to low rainfall and low humidity.

Bay windows are supported by braces and industrial strength cables, often at the top of the window but sometimes at the bottom. The bay window may need buttress supports if installed on the second floor. Wood screws on the interior also hold the bay window in place. Bay windows are heavy and need proper support to prevent sagging and wall damage. You need to ensure that the support system can hold the weight of the window and the roof cab over the window.

Folding window installation costs about $1,600 on average, ranging from $500 to $3,000. The cost factors of this project include the size, the type of folding windows, the number of panels, and the type of glass. Different types of folding windows include:

  • Standard folding window: $200 per linear foot

  • Glazed folding window: $240 per linear foot

  • Standard folding window and swing door: $1,000 per linear foot

  • Folding window and sliding door: $2,000 per linear foot

When your double-hung window upper sash keeps falling down, it means you could be letting out warm air in the winter or cool air from the AC in the summer. That means your HVAC system works harder to warm or cool the house, costing you extra on electric bills.

If the lower sash continues to fall down, it means when you’ve popped open the window for fresh air, it could slam shut. In addition to being inconvenient, this could be dangerous if you have small kids, children, or pets that like to hang out by the window.
