"He has kept alive a hemlock hedge for us for ten to twelve years, when everyone else’s hedges are dying from furry aphids. He did a wonderful job a few years ago of cleaning up the tree that feel on our house in a freak thunderstorm. He has left two or three trees in our yard in what he calls ‘hospice care’. If he doesn’t think the trees are in danger of falling on the house, he gives them a chance to see if they can make it, instead of just chopping them down. He knows how to prune things, instead of just lopping off branches. He understands the trees and he works with us to keep them healthy. He does so much for us. Some people think he’s higher than the other tree services around. I haven’t checked, because he he’s not a slash and burn kind of tree person. He might call himself an arborist, but I don’t know if he does. He does very well on the cleanup."

Arborists questions, answered by experts

It depends. Smaller, younger trees take longer to mature, but they're more resilient, their roots don't get as damaged during transplanting, and they recover faster. Plus, they're much more affordable to plant, and it's possible to DIY the planting.

On the other hand, mature trees produce fruit faster and provide more shade and privacy immediately. Ideally, a small or medium tree is the better choice if you can wait a few years for it to mature. But if you need immediate maturity, a larger tree is the only option.

Costs reflect the size of the tree or shrub, the complexity of the task, location accessibility, and disposal needs, and comprehensive quotes vary accordingly.

If a tree isn’t pruned, it can inhibit proper growth and fruit production, cause damage to both the tree and your property, and create entry points for pests and diseases. Pruning a tree enhances its stability, appearance, shape, and growth. Pruning trees regularly can also save you money long-term by avoiding overgrown or dangerous dying trees.

Dying trees and even dead trees can spread diseases to other living trees. There are many different types of tree diseases, so it’s essential to address the issue as soon as possible to prevent the disease from spreading to other healthy trees. If the tree cannot be saved and is infected, you need to have it removed to protect the other trees on your property.

The ideal time to prune a tree depends on the type of tree. Typically, late winter or early spring is a good time to prune but isn't always the case for "towering trees." It's best to trim when trees are dormant and before blooms appear but can vary depending on the tree type. It's always best to research the type of tree or ask a professional tree trimmer to determine when is the perfect time to prune your tree.
