"Guillermo did a wonderful job on the exterior of my home...painting a brick wall, all the woodwork, including the garage door, front door and deck. He was very professional, pleasant and punctual. His crew of three arrived early each morning and let me know when they were finished for the day. I will definitely use Friends Painting again"

"The exterior of our home was painted by Pro Twins Painting Co. They were very professional, on time, and did a high quality job at an affordable price. Pabel was very easy to work with and takes the time to make sure the job meets your expectations. Small jobs welcome

"I recently had them paint my kitchen cabinets and install new cabinet doors. Leo Pardal was extremely easy to work with, reasonably priced, very professional. Did the work promptly and was able to cover up my terrible oak, the kitchen looks beautiful and is a bright white i would highly recommend him for any kitchen painting and remodeling. I would be happy to talk to anyone who is looking for a recommendation for them. He painted the doors off site so I did not have to worry too much about the smell, he had a master clean up. He did quality work and had excellent customer service."

Interior Painting questions, answered by experts

Yes, you can paint over old exterior paint, but success depends on the condition of the existing paint and proper surface preparation. If the previous coating is in good shape (not cracked, peeling, or flaky), you can paint over it with less prep work. However, for the most durable and professional-looking results, follow these key preparation steps:

  • Clean the Surface: Thoroughly clean the exterior to remove all dirt, grime, and mildew. A pressure washer can be very effective for this.

  • Scrape and Sand: If the old paint is peeling, cracked, or flaky, you must scrape off all loose paint. After scraping, sand the surface to create a smooth, even base for the new paint. Sanding is especially important for wood siding.

  • Apply Primer: Using a quality exterior primer is highly recommended. It ensures the new paint adheres properly, improves durability, and provides a uniform finish. If you are painting a lighter color over a dark one, a tinted primer will help cover the old color more effectively.

Some brands offer paint-and-primer-in-one products for convenience. Taking the time to prepare the surface properly will not only increase your home's curb appeal but also help protect your siding and extend its life.

If the lead paint is in a place that is not easily disturbed and is not flaking or deteriorating, you do not necessarily need to remove it. Lead is toxic when dust particles or flakes from peeling lead paint are ingested. If people are not in the area with the lead paint, it may be safe to leave it in place. You still may want to consider encapsulation with a paint formulated for covering lead-based paint, just for an added layer of protection.

Professional painters often use a Turpentine-based solution to remove paint, since it can remove oil-based paint as well as acrylics and varnishes. It’s also an organic material derived from tree resin, so it’s less toxic than traditional paint strippers. Consult a professional cabinet refinisher or painter about the best materials to use for paint stripping.

The easiest and fastest way to remove paint from a surface is to use a chemical paint stripper to loosen the paint and then remove the paint using a paint scraper. You can also speed up the process by making the area as accessible as possible, which could include removing window sashes or taking doors off the hinges.

Numerous primers on the market will do the job of covering peeling paint. The best primers for peeling paint are bonding or adhesive primers that essentially glue the edges of peeling paint back to the subsurface while providing a smooth, even surface for the new paint coat.
