"If you are at all like us, you tend to fix your fence and find every reason to avoid getting a new one. But once we saw the finished product on our neighbor -- how fast the workers tore down the old one, dug the post holes, put up the new one AND stained it-- our decision was made. Sure, there are many fence companies that can do this; but Stand Strong uses heavy, heavy material --cedar that is 3/4 for the boards, metal-reinforced gates, shadow-box styling (or whatever look you want), and the best pricing out of four fence company bids-- and the decision becomes an easy one. Add to all of this the professionalism and courtesy extended by owner Justin, and you have a superior end result that you would happily recommend to others. You will NOT be disappointed"

Driveway Gates questions, answered by experts

Generally, the standard 10- to 12-inch-long and 1- to 1.5-inch-diameter gate springs will work. However, if you have an especially wide, thick, or heavy garden gate, you may need to opt for a longer, broader—and pricier—model to ensure secure closure and good longevity. These typically range between 12 and 16 inches long and are over 1.5 inches in diameter.

Yes, most electric and automatic gates can be opened manually. They are equipped with a manual override or release mechanism that detaches the motor from the gate, allowing it to be moved by hand. This feature is essential during power outages or other emergencies.

To activate the manual override, you will typically need a specific key or tool. In some cases, you may also need a screwdriver to remove a cover to access the release mechanism. The use of a key is a common security measure to prevent unauthorized individuals from manually opening the gate.

Because every model is different, it is highly recommended to consult your gate's user manual to familiarize yourself with the specific procedure before you need to use it. Keep any necessary keys or tools in an accessible location. Be aware that automatic gates can be very heavy, so opening and closing them manually may be difficult.

In North America, electric gates are also subject to the UL 325 Standard for Safety, which includes provisions to allow emergency responders to access the property.

A gate shouldn’t be higher or lower than the fence it's attached to. If the gate is lower than the fence, it encourages strangers to peek at your property. If the gate is higher than the fence, it just looks weird. Gates allow for increased security and aesthetics, so ensure the gate rests at the same height as the fence.

Screen doors (sometimes called barrier doors) and security doors serve different primary functions. A screen door's main purpose is to allow airflow and keep pests out, featuring a lightweight frame and a mesh screen. A security door, however, is a heavy-duty structure designed to prevent unauthorized entry. Security doors are installed with permanent screws into the home's walls and are often equipped with deadbolts or other heavy-duty locking mechanisms for enhanced protection against intruders.

Security doors are not limited to standard sizes, and you can customize them to fit your needs and entryway dimensions. That's one of the fantastic things about security doors—they can be tailored to match your home. Keep in mind that a custom-sized security door will likely cost more than a standard size.
