Small jobs welcome

"I have had loose pavers on my front porch for years. My son tried to fix them and made a mess of it (thank goodness he lives in Manhattan!). My neighbor told me he would repair it for 4 years. I finally got online and Carey at Wind River Masonry came to the rescue. They were ontime. Hardworking. The repair my son did made the job a lot more difficult. They were pleasant, offered to take in our garbage bins, just great guys! I would recommend them highly. I enjoyed reading other reviews by happy clients. Very pleased! Thank you Angi!"

"I had a very positive overall experience with Groundworks from the beginning, to the end of the repair work. Jake, the project manager, was accessible and positive. He answered all our questions and was very patient and thorough. He put our minds at ease in a stressful decision making process. The crew, Kaleb, George, Blake, and Christian, were delightful, upbeat, and so accommodating to my needs, concerns, and questions. smiling and ever polite as they did so. I feel the work was done competently and efficiently. Even the supervisor, Micah, was concerned for my satisfaction. The job puts my mind at ease for the future of my home. I recommend this company for your job."

"Aaron from The Patch Boys of Northern Utah was prompt and on time. I can't remember how many times contractors, repairman, handyman never arrived on time and made me waste my time waiting for them. Aaron did an excellent job removing my stainless steel backsplash and repairing the drywall damage behind the backsplash in preparation for a new tile backsplash. He also prepped (laid down protective coverings) the area from my front door all the way to the kitchen to prevent any damage to my new flooring. He went way above what I expected. I would recommend Patch Boys to anyone who needs quick, professional work done at fair prices."

Wall Repair questions, answered by experts

Depending on who you hire to build a retaining wall, the average cost, including demolition and reconstruction, for a 50-foot wall that's 4 feet in height is between $7,000 and $24,000.

A retaining wall can only function as a fence if it’s high enough on all sides to prevent someone from accidentally falling into the pool. However, most retaining walls retain dirt, which means their purpose is not related to safety. There would need to be nothing on the other side of the wall for it to be considered a fence, but in that case, it wouldn’t retain anything and would cease to be a retaining wall.

Failure to compact the soil during construction is the most common cause of leaning retaining walls. In addition, poor drainage can lead to excessive water pressure behind a retaining wall, pushing against it until it begins to move forward away from the soil it is holding back.

Sand and gravel are two suitable options for filling behind a retaining wall. If you’re building your own retaining wall, you’ll complete this part of the process—known as backfilling—after you finish laying the blocks. Make sure not to skip it—otherwise, you could wind up with drainage issues, which can cause your retaining wall to collapse.

Small retaining walls still require a foundation of some kind, typically a concrete footing. This helps to ensure the wall is structurally sound and prevents the ground from shifting over time, especially during those winter freeze/thaw cycles. The footing helps spread the weight of the wall and the load it carries over a larger area of the ground, thus assisting with stability. This is true of small retaining walls, larger rock garden walls, and the like.
