When wondering what size of breaker for a water heater is appropriate, the majority of hot water heaters need a 30-amp, two-pole breaker. Most residential water heaters use 240 volts and between 3,500 and 5,500 watts. If your appliance matches these measurements, a 30-amp breaker is likely perfect. Signs that your water heater needs replacing include rust or corrosion on the tank, persistent leaks, inconsistent heating, strange noises coming from the heater, decreased efficiency, and visible damage. However, in some cases, these issues can be fixed with a repair rather than a replacement, so make sure to consult a pro before investing in a new water heater.

If your system is not vented properly, you could experience what’s called backdrafting. Backdrafting is when your ventilation system isn’t working as it should, and instead of releasing gases outside, they get trapped inside your home. 

Gas and propane water heaters create a few types of combustion gases, but the most dangerous is carbon monoxide. If there’s too much build-up of these gases inside your home, it can lead to carbon monoxide poisoning.

You can convert a gas heater to electric, but it isn’t as simple as swapping a plug or two. First of all, you need to make sure there’s adequate power to the unit, as electric units require much higher power amounts versus gas. Then, you need to close off the gas lines and ventilation. Make sure you don’t also need a permit for an electric water heater—some cities require it. Making the switch can cost upwards of $1,500.

Whether to repair or replace your water heater is determined by your water heater’s age and condition. If you have an older model reaching the end of its life expectancy or if your water heater has been having problems more frequently than usual, replacement might serve you better. If you’ve been thinking about upgrading to a tankless water heater, then you may not want to spend any further on repairing your old one, either.
