"It went well! The plumber and his assistant arrived promptly on time, were courteous and professional, kept the mess to a minimum, and did the work quickly while keeping me informed of their progress. It was not an easy job and involved getting into the crawlspace to wrestle with the old cast iron pipe. The whole operation took six hours. They hauled out the old fixtures, and left the room as I asked them to: ready for me to fix the drywall, which they cut in a perfect rectangle, and install a new toilet and sink base cabinet. I really could not have asked for the job to go any better.

French Drains questions, answered by experts

The first rule of plumbing is nothing but water, toilet paper, number one, and number two go down the drain.

To prevent clogs, get yourself:

  • A compast pail where you can clean plates, drain grease, and toss scraps and paper towels.

  • Drain screens for the shower, tub, and bathroom sink to stop hair, jewelry, toys, etc. from going down the drain.

  • Trash cans for everything that shouldn’t go down the drain, like dental floss, hygiene products, and cat litter.

P.S.: If you do drop your priceless ring down the drain, take a deep breath, and then follow these steps to retrieve jewelry from your drain.

If you don’t have a sewer cleanout, clearing out clogs can be extremely difficult. You would need to try to clear the clog from sink drains, but it can be harder to reach the clog all the way in the drain line. A sewer cleanout makes it much faster and easier for pros to clear clogs from your main sewer line.

Even if the shower drain doesn’t seem clogged or dirty, plan to clean it out about once per month—or more frequently if you or your family shed a lot of hair. It’s a good practice to remove any hair from the drain on a daily basis, as hair can accumulate fast and cause clogs in no time. You may also want to have a plumber thoroughly clean the drains in your home once every six months.

Regardless of the drain cleaner type you choose to use, they all work through chemical reactions that create heat. Thanks to the heat, the clogged hair begins to dissolve until it is able to be flushed away. To avoid clogs in your drain due to hair, use hair catchers and empty them out after every shower.

Your sewer line can get grimy quickly. To prevent sludge buildup in your sewer line, pour a mixture of 1/3 cup of vinegar and 1/3 cup of baking soda down each drain in your home once a month. After about 30 minutes, flush the drain with hot water.

Some plumbers recommend 3/4 cup of bleach instead to clean any germs and bacteria that may build up in your sewer line. But this won’t break down any active clogs, and it cannot be combined with vinegar, as the mixture will create a toxic, hazardous gas.
