"John and his worker were very professional. They showed up the day they were scheduled to come and install the gutters and within several hours they were done. The work site was left clean and they removed the existing gutters. Prior to their coming to install the gutters, John came and explained clearly what would be done and gave me several suggestions as to where the down spouts would work best and let me decide where I wanted them installed. The estimate was completely explained, and they even gave me a veterans discount. The total bill was exactly what they had bid. I have already recommended them to several friends."

Gutter Repair and Replacement questions, answered by experts

Zinc gutters can truly last a lifetime. As one of the strongest materials used for roofing and gutter systems, zinc can last up to 90 years. Even copper gutters don't last as long as zinc gutters. Zinc gutters are a long-lasting investment in both the value and appearance of your home.

With routine maintenance, gutters don’t usually need to be replaced for 20 years, but there are warning signs that they might need early replacement. Signs that your gutters need to be replaced include sagging, visible cracks or holes, peeling paint, rust, standing water in your gutter, and water leaking into your basement. Pushing off replacing your gutters can lead to extensive damage to both the interior and exterior of your home. Regular maintenance can help your gutters last all 20 years — and sometimes, even longer.

On average, gutters need to be replaced every 20 years. Unprotected gutters in more extreme weather conditions are more prone to breaking and may need to be replaced sooner. Meanwhile, proper maintenance can extend your gutter’s life span even further. That said, proper installation, gutter hangers to provide additional support, and gutter guards or helmets all play an important role in how long your gutters last.

How you stop water from leaking between your gutters and fascia depends on the cause of the leak. Some leaks can be fixed simply by cleaning out clogged gutters or downspouts. Other leaks require you to seal holes or cracks in your gutters. Meanwhile, some leaks are a structural issue that requires replacing, changing, or adjusting your gutter system.

If your gutters get overwhelmed every time it rains, adding an extra downspout is a solution. First, you'll need to decide where to add the downspout. If your current setup only has a single downspout, one option is to place a new one at the opposite end of the gutter. If you already have a downspout at each end, adding a third one in the middle can help to lighten the load.

You can hire a professional to add a downspout yourself by cutting into the existing gutter and attaching the necessary parts, such as an outlet and brackets.
