"AJ Drywall provided a quick estimate and was able to come out just a few days later to do some ceiling drywall repair for me. They did a nice job at a very reasonable price. I would hire them again."

"Working with San Marcos Drywall Repair, and w Garrett, was so stress free and easy. His bids came in the best and the speed at which the work was accomplished was mind boggling. He made all the deadlines and came in on budget. Not only drywall, but grouting, painting, anything I asked he and his crew were capable of handling. I will call them every time. They make it easy and they listen. I always got a call back when I needed something, unfailing honest. What more can you ask for?"

"Javier and his team did excellent work removing popcorn ceilings in our vaulted ceiling living room, plus dining room and kitchen. The finishing work was just great. Looks beautiful in here, lightened the place tremendously and even coats of mud and paint to make our ceiling good for many more years. We highly recommend using this business if BV you have a similar project."

Small jobs welcome

"Wally from Mr. Handyman came over on time and did an amazing job. His quality of work was top notch, he was very professional and he also replaced all the old fans/vent/fixtures without any damage to the ceiling. The exhaust fan work especially required some careful work since the new exhaust fan was bigger and required him to cut some drywall and fit the fan in. In an earlier case (different provider) they cut the drywall and we needed to patch it later with painters. No such patching was needed this time since Wally did a great job installing it. I would highly recommend Wally from Mr. Handyman and we would hire him again! "

Drywall questions, answered by experts

You can skim coat plaster, but it’s better to repair the plaster itself. A skim coat is a thin coat of drywall joint compound spread over the surface of a wall. The result is a flat finish that looks pleasing, but part of the appeal of plaster is its imperfections and aesthetic. Skim coating is best when limited to drywall applications.

When doing a DIY paint job, it can be tricky to achieve the perfect, straight line between your wall and ceiling. There are several methods, including lining it with painter’s tape and using the “cut in” brush tactic. Some homeowners choose to apply a thin line of caulk to the wall-ceiling seam to create the appearance of a perfect line.

New plaster must be fully dry and cured before painting. The drying time for plaster ranges from 1 to 4 hours, but the curing process can take more than five days, depending on various factors, including humidity levels, temperature, the amount of plaster used, and airflow in the area. You should always apply primer before painting plaster.

Whether you apply the drywall mesh before or after drywall mud depends on the type of patch it is. For self-adhesive patches, you’ll put the patch down first and then coat it with mud. Mesh patches that are not self-adhesive will require you to put mud down first and then press the mesh into it, followed by additional coats of mud.

If your home was built before the 1940s and was not remodeled in the past 50 or so years, you probably have plaster walls. Aside from assuming, there are some practical ways to tell if you have plaster walls, including the following: If you knock on the wall and it feels solid, not hollow, if you can’t insert a thumbtack easily, if there are cracks that look like spiderwebs, or if your home has curved, arched, or swirled walls, doorways, or window openings.

If you have an unfinished basement or attic, you could examine the backs of any finished walls to check, too.
