"Doug was very thorough in explaining the work being done to our home. He payed attention to our wants and the fine details of the process. "Rep. checked entire system. He found several wires not connected properly and fixed this. He also made recommendations regarding the attachment of the panels to the rood that would provide more stability and leakproofing. The representative appeared to know what he was doing - much better than others, including the representative who was engaged by the roofer (who replaced our rood due to hail damage) to disconnect/connect the panels."

Roofing questions, answered by experts

Fall is widely considered the best time of year to replace a roof. The moderate temperatures are ideal for roofing crews to work and for new shingles to seal properly. Additionally, autumn weather is often drier, reducing the risk of weather-related delays compared to the rainier spring season.

While spring is also a viable option, the higher chance of rainfall can slow down the project. The main drawback to a fall installation is that it's the peak season for roofers, which can lead to higher prices and scheduling challenges.

To potentially save money, you could consider scheduling your roof replacement during the summer or winter off-seasons. However, both seasons have significant disadvantages. Extreme summer heat can make shingles too soft to handle, while winter's cold, snow, and ice can create dangerous working conditions and prevent shingles from sealing correctly, as they typically require temperatures above 40-45°F.

Yes, all roofs can benefit from flashing. Roof flashing can protect a property from water damage, roof leaks, mold, and other serious issues. It’s vital if you’d like to extend the lifespan of your roof and avoid costly repairs down the road.

Yes, moss can be dangerous for your roof if left in place to grow without treatment. The moss soaks up and holds moisture. Having a constantly damp roof could lead to problems with rot for the parts of the roof that consist of wood. Additionally, a patch of thick moss may draw insects and birds, which could damage the roof. Thick moss could block the roof’s drainage system. Water then may back up after a rainstorm and cause further damage that could eventually lead to roof repair expenses or the cost of roof replacement.

You can only overlay a roof once. Any additional layers of shingles will add too much weight and may also violate building codes. Once your roof has had an overlay, you’ll need to have a full roof replacement, including a tear-off of all existing roofing materials, when it’s time for a new roof.

No, cool roofs are not suitable for all climates. Cool roofs are very good at reflecting solar heat, so they’re suitable for homes in warm or hot climates. However, they’re not good at retaining heat, so they’re not suitable for homes in cold climates.
