Tillema & Sons is a family owned and operated full service masonry business. We do jobs for the individual homeowner or subcontract for other companies. Smaller jobs will require a small deposit with payment in full due when job is done. Larger jobs will require a down payment with periodic draws with payment due at end of job. Due to application and cure times between coats, stuccoing a house takes between 10 and 14 days. Professionals may be able to wrap up projects on smaller homes in 7 to 10 days, while stuccoing large, multi-level homes can take more than two weeks. For the standard three-coat stucco system, six days are dedicated solely to stucco drying timelines, which are necessary after each coat.
You can apply stucco to wood by wrapping it with grade D waterproof paper, installing trim accessories such as metal lath, control joints, weep screeds, casing beads, and expansion joints, and applying the stucco in three layers. You’ll need a scratch coat, brown coat, and finish coat, all applied with a trowel and screeded with a darby or straight edge. Each should cure for two days before you apply the next one.
One upside to stucco siding is that it can last for 50 to 80 years, and it’s reasonably low maintenance during that lifespan. However, you’ll need routine maintenance to keep it looking its best, as it will crack and chip as it ages. If you live in an area that sees heavier rainfall, sealing your stucco siding every five to 10 years may be necessary.
The best exterior paint finish for stucco is a flat or low-gloss finish. A high-gloss finish will show imperfections in the stucco and give it a candy-coated look that many homeowners don’t like. The best types of exterior paint to use on stucco are acrylic, masonry, and elastomeric. However, acrylic is recommended because it is both durable and breathable.
