Knowing the signs can alert you to a clogged drain line. Clogs cause slow drainage or cause no drainage (if there’s a complete blockage). You may also notice foul odors, gurgling noises, water backing up in other appliances on the same line, or a poorly flushing toilet. If you experience any of these issues and think your line might be clogged, call a plumber.

This depends on how old your home is and residential construction norms where you live. Most modern homes have outdoor shut-off valves, but many older homes have the water meter indoors. You're most likely to find this valve in the basement or utility closet if it's indoors. If you have an outdoor shut-off valve, it should be somewhere on the perimeter of your home.

While plumber’s tape is a great solution for many plumbing problems, there are some times when it’s not the right product for the job at hand. 

You shouldn’t use plumber’s tape on pipe connections in any of the following scenarios:

  • When connecting PVC pipes

  • If the pipe has wide threads, as water can still leak through the space between the threads

  • If the pipe has very tight threads, as the tape would prevent a proper connection

  • If the pipe threads are damaged, which would prevent the tape from providing a watertight seal

If your predicament is similar to any of these, a licensed plumber can help you solve the problem.

If you're dealing with a clogged sink drain, you may be able to avoid removing the drain by using a plunger to dislodge the clog. While we associate plungers with toilets, they can do the same job with your sink drain. If you're planning to go out of town and you're worried that the temperatures will drop below freezing while you're gone, it's a good idea to set your heat to no lower than 55 to 60 degrees. In most areas, this will provide enough warmth to help prevent your pipes from freezing.
