"Fred, the company owner came out himself to give us an estimate on doing the necessary electrical work to install a new tankless water heater. He was very thorough and explained things clearly. He wrote out the estimate on the spot. We found him to very engaging, and absolutely reliable and honest. We were very pleased with the work that Eli and Fred performed. Again, Fred made sure that we had a clear understanding of what was done and why. He also calculated our system load. Which gave us peace of mind. They even cleaned up after themselves! And most significantly- he stuck to his estimate, and guarantees his work. I highly recommend Coastal Sign and Electric!"

"Careful attention to placement of fixtures and connections, grounding and coverage for important gas line and electrical lines made for a complete and thorough coverage and did not disrupt the look of the house. M. Hamilton discussed the job prior to the work in complete and pertinent terms. Work was done efficiently and tidily."

"Coastal Digital has done my work since 2007. I have various building projects. Their work included network wiring, telephone jacks, home theater, surround sound, TV mounts, and alarm systems. They have been my only low voltage wiring contractor for the past 20 years. I have also had projects in other states, and they have worked with me on them. I am still buying and using them today! "Heinz provided us with a detailed, scaled, drawing of his plan for the project. After listening to our ideas he redrew the bench; we agreed on the style and he built what we wanted."

Electrical questions, answered by experts

You will need a permit for any electrical work that involves installing or replacing wiring, moving or installing new fixtures, switches, or outlets, hardwiring appliances or HVAC equipment, installing subpanels, and upgrading electrical service. You typically don’t need a permit to have an electrician replace an existing light fixture or electrical box. You can always call your local building department to see if your project needs a permit, but a professional electrician will be able to tell you. In most cases, your professional will pull the permits for you.

As a safety measure, you should always turn off the main breaker while operating your generator’s backup breaker. In addition, you should also switch off all appliance breakers so you don't have a power surge when the main breaker turns back on. And finally, turning off the main breaker prevents back-feeding, which endangers utility workers with the risk of electrocution. Back-feeding could also destroy the electrical circuits of your neighbors if they use the same power network.

Home power is measured in kilowatt-hours, commonly expressed as kWh. The average home uses between 800 and 1,000 kWh per month. Peak usage (and highest bills) occurs in the middle of summer and the depths of winter. Keeping on top of your usage during these crucial months will lower your annual average usage considerably.

While washers and dryers do not require a GFCI (ground fault circuit interrupter) outlet to function properly, electrical codes often mandate their use for safety. The National Electrical Code (NEC) requires GFCI protection for all outlets within six feet of a water source. This means a washer and dryer must be plugged into a GFCI outlet if they are installed in locations like a laundry room, utility room, garage, or basement. In other areas without a nearby water source, there is no specific requirement, but using a GFCI outlet is still recommended for extra peace of mind. It is always best to consult your local codes and regulations to ensure compliance and safety.

The size of your home will help determine the size of your electrical panel. Usually, the decision comes down to a 100-amp electrical panel versus a 200-amp panel. Smaller homes, especially those without an HVAC system, may be able to get by with a 100-amp panel.

If you have a larger home or need to power AC, a 200-amp panel should be the best fit. It’s unlikely that you’ll need a larger panel than that unless you have a larger home or unique electrical needs, but an electrician can help you make the final call.
