"Really great job, very interested in 'my small project', not only repaired the roof leak but went out of their way to find and close attic rodent access holes. Armor Shield Roofing WILL be my choice if and when we need a complete new roof."

"I highly recommend this company. Thanks to Brian and his company! Brian, the owner, called me on a weekend when I was panicked and had been told my insurance was being cancelled due to the age of my roof. He calmed me down, explained the process and even met with the insurance company adjuster to make sure the roof replacement would be fully covered! The day of the install the arrived at 8:45 and were finished by 4:30. They cleaned up entirely and I now have a beautiful Rustic Brown Architectural asphalt shingle roof. I cannot explain how much I appreciate the way the entire process was handled and I now have a beautiful new roof! Please use this company and I know you will not be disappointed! I was blessed!"

Roofing questions, answered by experts

Roof work is dangerous and exacting, and a misstep could lead to even more costly repairs, so we do not recommend DIYing. If you are dead set on giving it a go, practice safety measures. Wear a harness, only work during mild weather, and have a partner to help. Potentially DIY-friendly jobs include patching up small leaks, sealing areas around the chimney, and replacing a few shingles.

The minimum recommended slope for a porch roof is 1/4:12, which means 1/4-inch of rise every 12 inches of run. Slopes of 3:12 and 4:12 are more common and provide faster drainage for runoff. Make sure to choose a pitch that’s appropriate both for the climate in your area and the type of roof material you install. Hire a roofer if you need help determining what the right roof pitch is.

If you’re building the roof trusses yourself, which isn’t recommended, it will be more affordable than buying pre-built trusses. Trusses cost more because they use the same amount of material, but you’ll also be paying for the labor, as well as the delivery to your home. However, if you’re having a contractor build the roof for you, then trusses will be less expensive, as the labor costs to build roof framing on-site will cost more.

Yes, clay and concrete tile roofs will keep your home cooler in the summer for two reasons. First, the material has low heat conductivity, so heat transfer from the sunlight and the outside air to your home will be very slow. Additionally, tile roofs have air gaps between the tiles and the roof decking, which helps further insulate your structure from heat gain. Light-colored tile is especially energy-efficient and will minimize how much outside heat transfers into your home.

Shingle damage comes in many forms, and the damage usually depends on the wind speed and the shape of the roof before the winds. Typically, when shingles are damaged by wind, they become torn, creased, or detached from the roof. Some might go missing entirely. More extensive roof damage might occur if a tree branch or other debris has fallen onto the roof as a result of the windstorm.
