I do not recommend this company for new construction jobs. He may be ok for small repairs, but it became apparent that Alaskan is not set up to handle much else. Perhaps this job was just too much for him or his company. He had employee problems, time management problems, money problems, etc. We tried being sympathetic and tried to work with him, but after a while the excuses and damage to property were just too much. From the start of the discussions/bid, we were never given any type of formal bid or agreed upon amount. Everything was just verbal. We were assured by the owner that all work we wanted done...he could do... no problem. It took us over 7 months of trying to get work done before we finally told the owner we no longer wanted to continue with his services. And even then, there were things we had asked him to do that never got done. And the work was not finished when he left. It was apparent that he just wanted off the job. There were inconsistencies during the install. A lot of our electrical was designed to be exposed so being neat, consistent and conscious of that fact was extremely important. This was conveyed multiple times to the owner and his employees. Work done by the one or two employees he had was sloppy and poor. Damage was done to our structure in more than one place where care and planning was not done. Most of the damage could not be repaired. Framers had to try and hide or cover up mistakes made by them. This leaves me concerned because if I found the visible damage and mistakes, what was done within the walls that got covered up? We have recently discovered that one of the electrical fixtures/switches are not working. I contacted Alaskan requesting them to come back and look at the problem. As usual, they told me they would be here in a day or two. They never showed up...never called. The problem remains. We had hoped to use Alaskan for our new ac/heat install but with all that had happened, we did not have the faith nor trust that the job could be done correctly or in a timely fashion. I would recommend you be very careful with this company and what work you ask them to perform. Also, be cautious on the timeframe. They will tell you what you want to hear and then may have trouble delivering. We had hoped to find someone locally to support our local economy; however, the estimates were significant. Before the job, a structural engineer from another company came to house to verify what the Stratum sales person estimated and to offer any additional advice. This same person came a second time to inspect the work performed. In both cases a detailed report was provided. The bid also included a visit by another plumbing inspector. All of these costs were a part of the bid and were not included in other bids.We did not have to use the companies with whom they contracted, but they each had good references on Angie's List. We are pleased with the work. They even had to work on the inside of the house and there was no noticeable disruption when I returned. Carpet was down just as I had left it. We received a detail lifetime warranty which is transferable with the house. FAQs for structural engineering projects in Nacogdoches, TX
No, it’s not legal for unlicensed individuals to conduct structural calculations for buildings or building repairs. Not only do licensing requirements prevent DIYers from tackling this project, but mistakes can also be extremely dangerous and put your property and anyone inside or near it at risk of severe injury or even death. You should always hire a licensed and certified local structural engineer to make structural calculations.
Yes, all states require structural engineers to carry the proper license, with specifics determined by each state. You can use Angi’s state licensing tool to confirm that the structural engineer you’re considering holds the required licensing to tackle your job. Hiring an unlicensed structural engineer will not only cause issues with permits but it could also lead to an unsafe building. The cost of a professional, licensed, and experienced engineer is well worth the investment.
The process of hiring a structural engineer starts by finding reliable professionals in your area and comparing quotes from at least three of them. From there, you can narrow down your selection by asking some leading questions:
Do you have experience working in my specific area?
Do you have professional indemnity insurance?
What will your structural report cover?
Do you charge a flat fee for a structural report or by the hour?
How long have you been in business?
Do you have a list of customer references?
Structural engineers typically charge between $100 and $250per hour, but many jobs won’t be based on a per-hour fee. Instead, the structural engineer will offer a flat rate for the inspection and structural calculations. The flat rate for a structural engineer costs an average of around $550, but you could see prices ranging from $300 to $800, depending on the complexity of your project and how easy it is to access certain parts of your home for the inspection.
Whether you’re building a new home or building an extension on your existing property, you will likely need both a structural engineer and an architect. A structural engineer will determine what loads your foundation and framing can safely handle, and an architect will draw plans according to those structural calculations to simplify the building process. You can start by contacting a structural engineer near you, as many work alongside architects and can get all of the prep work done at once.
