Bedrooms and bathrooms often use 30- to 32-inch widths, and closet doors can be anything from slim singles to wide bi-folds. Height is usually 80 inches across the board; however, always measure your actual opening. “Standard” only works if it matches what’s already in place.

Not every door can be converted into a pocket door. Pocket doors require specific hardware and a hollow space within the wall to slide into when open. The door must be sturdy enough to handle the sliding mechanism but not too heavy, as excessive weight can cause operation and track alignment issues. While some standard interior doors can be adapted for use as pocket doors with the right hardware, it's essential to ensure the door's compatibility and the structural feasibility of creating a pocket in the wall.

Most bedroom doors are 30, 32, or 36 inches wide and about 80 inches tall, depending on the size of the room, the height of the ceiling, and any special accommodations that may be necessary for the bedroom’s occupant. The size of your bedroom door may be larger than average if it leads into a very large bedroom or a home with unique wall or ceiling features.

You might be able to turn a normal door into a fire-rated door, but you’re better off purchasing one that meets all NFPA 80 standards. You can convert a pre-hung door into a Dutch door, but it’s more of a pain. It’s doable, but expect some trial and error because it’s not a straight-swap situation.
