"The technicians called before arriving, were on time, neat and professional. They walked around the property with me as I explained what I wanted done, they listened to my questions and helped me make some decisions (like which outdoor light location to use of 2 available). They also provided suggestions about adding lighting to my kitchen and provided an estimate. The work was not done quickly (there was a trainee on the job), but I was confident that all work was overseen and completed correctly. I will be contacting them soon to add the lights to my kitchen."

"They came and showed me samples of different types and styles of window
coverings (there was a large selection). They listened to me about what I
was looking for and what my budget was, and made some great
recommendations-I learned more about blinds than I ever wanted to know!
The blinds were ordered and came in for installation within a week. I
was surprised at how short a time it took to actually do the
installation. I am really happy with how everything looks (REALLY NICE) and they
spent time showing me how to operate the blinds to lower and raise them.
They picked up all the used boxes to discard them elsewhere."

"I would highly recommend Jane & Co, and will definitely use them for future painting projects. I used Jane for her colorizing services and am so pleased with our choices of paint colors, Row House Tan and Urban Jungle. I elected to use the high end paint finish called cashmere, and it is beautiful. Her team of painters were professional, courteous, and took great care with prep and clean up. Kudos to Jane & Co -- they are awesome!"

Lighting questions, answered by experts

If your lights are shorting out during rain storms or other winter events, you should probably replace them. These shorts indicate electrical issues that could cause serious hazards. Look for outdoor-rated lights with connectors made for rainy conditions to replace them. But if your Christmas lights are new and you want further protection, you can find weatherproof covers to add to the male-end connectors of your Christmas light strings. These can minimize the risk of shorts.

The five common types of landscape lighting are up-lighting, down-lighting, spotlights, built-in lighting, and pathway lighting.

  • Up-lighting casts light upwards from the ground, mostly for aesthetic purposes.

  • Down-lighting directs light onto the ground, lighting pathways, or outdoor space.

  • Spotlights cast direct, focused lighting in any direction.

  • Built-in lighting integrates lighting into an outdoor feature.

  • Pathway lighting illuminates walkways, increasing safety.

No, you should not leave LED Christmas lights up all year. While the LED lights themselves are very durable, their wiring and casings can be as vulnerable as any Christmas lights. They’re subject to drying out, experiencing cold or sun damage that causes them to crack, and even damage caused by gnawing pests. (The same is true of incandescents.) If you want your lights to last the years that they’re rated for, bring them inside after Christmas is over.

Modern outdoor light fixtures are waterproof and weather resistant, and, provided they’re installed correctly and by a professional, the fixture and wiring can last for 20 to 30 years or more. The lifespan will depend largely on the quality of the fixture. The lifespan of the bulb will depend on the type of light you install:

  • CFL bulb (for sustained use): 15,000 hours

  • Halogen bulb (mostly for security): 2,000 hours

  • HID bulbs (for security): 12,000 hours

  • Incandescent bulb: 1,000 hours

  • LED bulb: 50,000 hours

There are a number of reasons that landscape lights burn out, including an incorrectly installed transformer, inconsistent voltage, and burned-out or faulty bulbs. Troubleshoot landscape lighting problems by first determining whether it’s a system-wide problem or an issue with just one light, which will help you get to the bottom of your outdoor lighting woes.
