"Ray was prompt and professional and did a good job on filling and sealing cracks and power washing and sealing our back deck. It was a difficult job in that the deck was on the second floor and had sustained cracks from sun and water leakage. Ray and his team were able to seal the deck well, but it was difficult do do anything about the cosmetic appearance of the filled cracks in the deck itself."

"The quality of the stain on the fence was good, however they set up their equipment and did the mixing of cleaning solution and stain in the middle of the back yard. Apparently their equipment had a leak and they left a large puddle of stain and cleaning solution. The following day there was an area about 6 ft wide and 20 ft long were the grass was dead. I contacted them and they suggested I water for about 2 weeks and see what happens. So far the grass has not recovered. It appears that the area will need to be dug out about 6 inches deep, add clean fill and sod. They have offered to make things right. I will find out in the next week what my landscaper will charge and see if they are willing to pay for the fix."

"Mr Lopez and crew did fantastic job creating a level outdoor patio space, including ramp, that allows access for me using walker or scooter when my hip acts up and I cannot walk without help. He took my design and made it work beautifully despite tree roots and rocky soil. They were wonderful to work with."

Deck Cleaning questions, answered by experts

No, you don’t need a permit to repair and replace a few boards on an existing deck. However, if you’re making structural changes to the deck or tearing down the old one and building a new one, you will likely need a permit. Check with your local municipality for the regulations and rules in your area, or ask a local contractor who builds decks for advice.

A wood deck requires annual cleaning and regular inspections for loose or broken boards, nails, and screws. It should be refinished by applying a stain or sealer every two to three years to protect the wood from water damage, rot, mildew, and sun fading. The exact frequency can depend on the climate and the deck's exposure to sun and moisture. If your deck is painted, it will need repainting approximately every 10 years. Signs that your deck needs refinishing include faded, splintering, or warping boards.

Building a deck without a permit could lead to fines for both the homeowner and the contractor. The exact penalties will depend on your state and municipal building laws. You might also be required to remove the deck and apply for a permit before you can build another. While it might be tempting to skip the permit to save a few bucks, it’ll cost you much more if you’re caught.

To prepare a deck for a hot tub, start by thinking about safe and easy access in and out of the tub. Homeowners should plan for steps or consider built-in seating, a level surface around the perimeter, and a clear, slip-resistant path from the house. A hot tub requires sufficient space around it for comfortable entry and exit, ensuring no awkward squeezing or stepping over high edges. Good lighting and handrails can also make a big difference, especially for nighttime use.

Most building codes list a minimum width of 36 inches and a maximum height of 7¾ inches. However, for the most comfort and spaciousness, you’ll want to aim for a width of at least 48 inches and a height of 7 inches. Again, it’s always a good idea to base your numbers off steps that you already use comfortably.
