Yes, you can pour concrete over an existing concrete basement floor to save time and money on fully ripping out an existing concrete slab. However, it’s not a perfect solution, so consult a pro before moving forward. You must take specific measurements, and these kinds of floors don’t have the same longevity.

When pouring a new concrete slab, you should consider how additional costs will affect your total, including reinforcements, decorative enhancements, finishing, and curing. It's also important to consider local laws regarding the grade, drainage, and permits for installing concrete on your property. Speak with your professional about the ideal thickness for your slab, and also consider whether you’ll need drainage for slab longevity.

There’s no difference between a “slab foundation” and a “slab-on-grade foundation,” and contractors and homeowners use the terms synonymously. “Slab foundation” is just a shortened version of “slab-on-grade.” In both cases, the homebuilder will pour the concrete foundation into a mold they build directly on the ground. As such, these foundations require no expensive excavation.

To remove carpet padding glue from concrete, scrape away as much of the top layers as possible with a sharp-edged scraper or putty knife. You can be more aggressive on a concrete floor than on hardwood, so scrape off as much as possible. Then you can soak the area with hot water for a few minutes before continuing to scrape. If there is still glue left behind, use a solvent that is made to remove adhesives and apply it to the area. Then scrape the rest of the glue off.

Penetrating sealer seeps into concrete pores to protect it from moisture and staining, cracking, and mold caused by water. This means you cannot remove penetrating sealers like topical sealers. The good news is that penetrating sealant doesn’t have to be removed before resealing, as most topical sealers must. Instead, you’ll want to buy a compatible penetrating sealant (often the same kind already in the concrete) and apply it. Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions.
