"Paul and his crew got to work right away and completely transformed our house. He even guided us with paint choices that ended up complementing the whitewashed ceilings. He was extremely professional and did an amazing job. Everything looks flawless. We had other issues come up during the move and he was able to coordinate his subcontractors to work with us. We were able to get everything done before we moved in at the end of the two week period. His son, Justin, is also super nice! We've already recommended Paul to our best friends and their hiring him to work on their home. We're planning on painting the exterior portion of the house in the future and you can be assured that we will be hiring Paul and his crew."

Awnings questions, answered by experts

Besides the type of awning, you’ll need to choose the type of cover. Your awning installation professional will review your options with you, including availability and costs. The types of covers you can choose from include:

  • Wood, which is durable but can be damaged easily by rainwater and fire

  • Cotton offers flexibility, weatherproofing, and easy cleaning

  • Canvas is highly durable and is a good choice for retractable awnings

  • Metal is sturdy but is prone to rust

  • Polyester is easy to clean and is a more breathable option

  • Polycarbonate is highly resistant to UV rays and is difficult to damage

Yes, you can install an awning yourself, and it can be an excellent DIY project with immediate benefits. This is most feasible for smaller, pre-assembled units. However, awnings are often heavy and awkward for one person to handle, so you should always have at least one helper. If you have difficulty lifting heavy objects, professional installation is recommended to ensure proper mounting and durability.

Awnings offer a number of benefits, including:

  • Reduced summer home cooling costs with lower solar heat gains

  • Protection from sun, rain, and snow damage

  • Increased curb appeal for your home

Keep in mind that awnings also have drawbacks, including the potential to reduce your view, block natural light, and create new occasional home maintenance needs.

The main disadvantage of an awning window is that you can’t use it to escape in an emergency. Another disadvantage of awning windows is that they can get dirty quicker than other types of windows that don’t open outward, especially if you keep them open when it’s raining or snowing. You can hire a local window replacement installer to decide if an awning window is right for your home.

To ensure the installation process goes smoothly, it's wise to ask a potential pro several questions. Key topics to cover include:

  • Licensing and Insurance: Do you have a professional license and insurance to perform this work? This is crucial as installing an awning into a home's exterior can be a complex job.

  • Cost Estimate: What was the price of similar jobs you've completed? Awning installation costs can vary based on size, design, and location, so this helps establish a general price range.

  • Project Timeline: How long will this project take to complete? Getting an estimated timeline provides peace of mind, even though unforeseen hurdles can occur.

  • Building Permits: Will I need a building permit for this project, and who is responsible for obtaining it? An experienced local contractor will be knowledgeable about local rules and regulations.

  • References and Portfolio: Do you have references from previous clients or photos of completed projects? Speaking with past clients and seeing previous work can give you insight into their experience and the quality of their work.
